HSG failed "cervix like a pin hole"

Hi, went for HSG and the dr could not get the cathether through as my cervix was described as a pin hole. I am being referred now for a lap procedure under general anaesthetic. I shouldnt google but i am finding cervical stenosis coming up again and again also finding that its nearly impossible to concieve with this. Did anyone else have this issue during a HSG and go on to become pregnant? I am going to ring my dr next week as i asked no questions the other day about it and the dr didnt seem too alarmed.

When I went to have a hycosy, the doctor absolutely could not get the catheter through my cervix and recommended I have a hysteroscopy to check for any problems, and that they slightly dilate my cervix while they were doing it.

When I went to have the hysteroscopy, the doctor had no problems at all with my cervix and eventually concluded that it had just been an off day when I'd gone for the hycosy.

I've never had any problems with transfers etc subsequent to that, and I'm now 20 weeks pregnant.

I had a very similar issue with hycosy also, they tried for about 40 mins and couldn’t secure the catheter, saying I had a tiny cervix. I had lap and dye and hysteroscopy last week so am just recovering from that. The surgeon also said she couldn’t see a reason why they couldn’t do hycosy so as @Persipan says, it could have been an off day. Also during the hycosy I asked if it was possible my tiny cervix was reducing my fertility and they said no as it’s big enough for my period to get out of, so should be big enough for sperm to get into!

Thank you @Kataa that has really made me panic less as I was thinking the same if I have my period each month then sperm should be able to get in! I should have asked the dr all about it there and then but was in a daze!!! Hi @Lousarah1982 sry I'm only seeing this now! I'm getting on good. After the failed HSG I had a lap and dye done 2 weeks ago and all was normal....including my cervix. So as stated above it must just have been the day that was in it. I found out I'm not ovulating and I have PCOS so I have started taking letrozole this cycle to try induce ovulation so finger crossed 🤞

As @Kataa said ,my surgeon saId the same

If blood can come down then sperm can go up

Think was 38 and had under nhs I had to have a general as couldn’t get catheter up. They also didCervical dilation while under

Tho when had ivf privately the ec pain was awful and I think it shut again

When had cycle 3 abroad they did a trial procedure and found cervix shut again

I ended up having 2nd cervical dilation abroad at clinic as much cheaper £600 then U.K. £3k !!!

I did get preg 5th go and dd will be 3 soon

But when giving birth cervix didn’t dilate Much but had contractions - but I told them this

So yes you can get preg but would advise cervical dilation to make ec essier let alone birth

Yes the price difference is insane

Think flights were £100 ish for us both so way under a third of uk price and abroad could do me the next month and time was an essence as I was then 41

And tbh felt happier Having done in Madrid where I was having ivf as then same surgeon who did both procedures and he knew my cervix and womb lol

Oh that's great to know that there are options abroad to look into if this doesn't work. I haven't even started to look into ivf yet as I'm praying the letrozole will work! If not then I'm down the ivf road. I'm delighted it all worked out for you I love hearing good success stories 😊

Ah that's great to hear @CCPP I went to have a HSG in Feb and the doctor couldn't get the catheter through my cervix. Turned out I had scarring across it from previous letz operations over 15 years ago.
The doctor had to force through it (major ouch) to get the catheter through, and then I passed out so couldn't continue with the op!
I did get pregnant 2 days later though but had a miscarriage 10 weeks later.
Since then I've had my cervix checked twice and had to have it dilated as it is stenosed (if that's a word.... Or stenosis of cervix, basically closed). The doctors also still keep saying that if I've had my period for the past few years then there's no way the scarring could have been stopping me getting pregnant but I don't believe that especially after getting pregnant 2days after the first procedure in Feb!
Previous to getting pregnant I always had painful periods and never any fresh red blood, just brown blood (sorry if tmi!). Since the miscarriage and dilation I've had completely pain free periods and very red blood.
Starting iui this month if I don't get pregnant naturally this time round.
I did get my cervix dilated privately which was £200 at the Spire clinic and also once on the NHS, had to wait 7 weeks for the NHS appointment which wasn't that bad.
Before the NHS appointment the doctor almost didn't believe what I was saying and said he would definitely be able to get a catheter through and that wasn't the thing stopping getting me pregnant.... And then failed to get even the smallest catheter through and had to numb my cervix and then had to dilate it a few times with different tools. Was horrendous!
Fingers crossed of I don't get pregnant naturally then the IUI will work

@lou that’s cheap. Admitley mine was now 4yrs who. Maybe price has come done but rang 3 clinics and all said be £3k ish due to needing general

I also had cancerous cells removed via cone biopsy and lasering

Was told I had a weird shaped cervix due to treament /method used. Was early 90’s

I always wondered if that made my cervix .. stenosis of cervix

@Lousarah1982 thank you for shsring your experience. I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriage xx who would have thought it's such a tough road once you start ttc!
Your HSG sounds just like mine except the doc didn't force the catheter in...thank god! But it does make me think how could it have been so closed one day and 'normal' during the lap & dye! And now what your describing as your periods before dilation that's exactly how I would describe mine which makes me wonder. I am back in 2 months it's definitely something I am going to make sure about as time is of the essence!

The doc carrying out my HSG also asked if I had surgery or letz to my cervix. I have never had anything only smear tests carried out so it was pretty closed that day!

How did they dilate your cervix?

@Blondeshavemorefun 'shut like a clam' is exactly how I felt mine was after the HSG. Great to hear good stories of clinics abroad though its definitely an option worth exploring if I have to go find that road.

@CCPP well, "dilate" sounds nicer than what the process actually involves... They basically get a metal rod sort of thing, they have loads in different diameters and basically push it through the cervix hole and keep going until it goes all the way through. Then they use a larger sized rod, then keep going until the hole stays open.
They used 4 different sized rods on me. The numbing injection helped a bit but jeez it's still uncomfortable!

@Blondeshavemorefun yea if I'd had the dilation done under gender anaesthetic it would have cost more but I just made them do it when I was awake.... And passed out each time from the pain. I'd do it again though even knowing how painful it is as was over in 5 seconds. Well the first 2 were, the last one on the NHS took longer as they kept using different sized rods

@Lousarah1982 oh god that sounds painful!!!! I would definitely have to be knocked out I am so squeamish with anything done down below!!!!! Are the rods permanent or do you have to get them changed?
