Progesterone from ovulation - yes or no?

Good morning all

When I saw our RMC consultant back in May, she advised me to take progesterone (cyclogest) from ovulation, which I have been doing since.
I saw her a couple of weeks ago and I asked her for more as was running out. She said she has stopped prescribing it to her patients as the Prism trial proved it didn't make any difference (in her medical lingo).
Now I'm finally in the TWW again and feel like I'm not doing anything to help, if that makes sense. I worry that having PCOS will affect my natural progesterone production and, if I am pregnant this cycle (I can but dream) and lose yet another baby, I will blame myself for not taking the supplement.
I still have some left, would you take it anyway? Or is it really pointless?

Hi,

Personally I would take it anyway. I'm on my first medicated cycle. I ALWAYS spot after about 10 dpo, sometimes less. I stopped the progesterone 2 days ago and just waiting for af (bfn 2 days ago) and no spotting this cycle. So while it may not directly affect pregnancy outcomes according to that study, if it's maintaining the uterus lining for longer (in my case anyway) that is surely a good thing for an implanting embryo. Btw I'm under a private clinic with a very good rep and consultant prescribed it for me.
Also, just to add a friend of mine who was ttc for a year, suspected she had a luteal phase defect and bought progesterone cream. She got pregnant that first cycle and used it again a couple of years later when ttc her second child and got pregnant again no problem. So you could look into buying the cream if your Dr won't prescribe the pessaries.

It's okay, I've found out. Google wasn't giving me any results before but I found an online shop that sells it and it says on there

Sure, I found it by searching on MN and it was actually a menopause thread! I bought it from Biovea and it's their natural prog cream

Hi @Frazzlerock can I ask when you started the cyclogest? I know it's after ovulation - they told me to start the day after I get a positive LH test, but my worry is that I've read you can ovulate up to 36 hours after a positive LH, so what if I accidentally take it too early and it stops me ovulating?! How did you know what cycle day to start?
Also, if you didn't want the cream I think you can go to a private Dr to get the prescription for my cyclogest. My NHS doctor is still prescribing it believing it to work

Hi @Sylva123 My consultant told me to start it as soon as I ovulated, but, as you know, its a tricky thing to pin point exactly.
I think you do have to be careful not to take it too early.
I was taking it once Ovusense confirmed ovulation, which worked out at about 3DPO.

The cream has arrived and I was expecting my period either yesterday or today. i'm feeling quite period-y so I will have to save the cream for next cycle I think. Although it says on the packaging that each pump is 20mls of progesterone, but I have been taking 400mg a day so I'm not sure how many pumps I'll need to be equivalent

I've also bought about 50 ovulation sticks in a 'sods' law' effort, but I know deep down I am not pregnant and will end up using them all...

I bought progesterone tablets in a pharmacy in Spain, the brand was Utrogestan. They can be taken orally or vaginally.
