Ivf with one ovary

Needtotalkivf19 · 06/11/2019 21:07

Good evening all,
This is the first time on this site and I was wondering if anyone has undergone ivf with one ovary. I’ve been recently told I only have one ovary and one damaged Fallopian tube(which will need to be removed before starting our ivf journey). So was wondering if anyone as been through the same thing. Also how did everyone decide on which clinic to choose, they’re so many would love to hear your opinions on how you found treatment or how you decided they was the one( we will be funding treatment ourselves has have a 10year from my previous relationship)
Thanks in advance

Hi not quite the same thing but I did have my second tube removed a few months ago before starting a second round of ivf (I lost one tube to ectopic previously and then ended up with another on my second IVF transfer) - I was asked if I wanted the tube saving if they could do it but I said no. One ovary is compromised due the amount of surgery I've had.

Choosing a clinic is very personal and subjective- I really like my clinic but I've seen other people give it negative reviews? I went to loads of open evenings with different clinics before choosing - definitely recommend that. I ignored the success rates as I knew My chance of success was low before starting (low AMH, multiple miscarriages, mid thirties and history of ectopic). I like all the staff at my clinic its relaxed and friendly, only about 15 mins drive away and they start scans at 730 so I can go before work and not have that stress to deal with. I also wanted to do mild stim low protocol ivf which not many places offer. Whilst I haven't had success yet I can't fault the care and treatment I've had and it was them that called the ambulance when I had my ectopic when my local hospital ignored me and the compassion shown was second to none. I also conceived naturally in between cycles and they did everything they could to support me and try and prevent miscarriage - sadly didn't work but not for want of trying. Choose the clinic that makes you feel like a person rather than a blank cheque - one that makes you feel like they genuinely care about giving you a baby not just another customer or a success rating x

I had my left ovary and tube removed a few years ago and started IVF this year. We got 9 eggs from the stim cycle, 7 of which fertilised and made it to freeze at blastocyst stage, so we did pretty well all things considered. Had failed fresh transfer in July and gearing up for first FET in a couple of weeks. We're on the NHS so no choice of clinic. Best of luck to you and your ovary! x

@Needtotalkivf19
Thankyou! Yes still having treatment - I transfer a PGS tested mosaic embryo in a couple of weeks and will likely do either one more full round or a couple rounds of natural ivf. I'm with Create Birmingham

Hi OP, I only have one ovary after clomid caused me to develop a large cyst and an infection and I had to have surgery to remove my left ovary and fallopian tube last year. Since then I've had 2 fresh and 2 frozen rounds of IVF and my one ovary worked super hard! I got 16 eggs on my first cycle and 17 the next time. I was on quite a high dose of stims due to an initial low natural follicle count but the doctors were still quite surprised at how many eggs I produced. I was really worried about it but it seems the one ovary compensated by working extra hard. I agree it's hard to find much info about IVF with one ovary! Very pleased and grateful to say I am now 15 weeks pregnant after many years of heartache and thinking it would never happen, from a FET following the 2nd fresh cycle.

In terms of choosing a clinic, there isn't a lot of choice near us so we were limited geographically. Our first round was NHS funded and we stuck with them for our self funded round as we liked them. I would say consider travel times when deciding, our actual clinic was an hour away but they have a satellite unit in our local town where we both work where I had all my scans and nurse appointments, which made it much easier to fit around work.

Wishing you so much luck, it's an incredibly tough journey x

Hi @Needtotalkivf19! I'm afraid I don't have any advice but wanted to drop you a message because I'm very much in the same boat. I'm 28, lost one ovary to a cyst ten years ago and just last week had surgery to remove another cyst on my remaining ovary, during which I found out my fallopian tube is blocked due to scarring. I did try stimulation/egg collection in September as a precaution ahead of surgery but it failed, as my numbers were awful (low AMH, high FSH etc). I'm hoping things might improve now the cyst has been removed so will be attempting stimulation/egg collection again next year, for IVF in the future. Would be interested to know which clinic you end up going with.

I feel like it's rare to hear from people who have been a similar situation so just wanted to let you know you're not alone, and to wish you lots of luck with IVF. x

Sunshineandsea- first of all congratulations!! And Thankyou for sharing you story, it great to hear positive outcomes. It makes me more hopefully.

Greyxeight- sorry to hear your in the same situation, i know how you feel and it’s not great. I felt so alone before I found this site, but I’m starting to learn it more common than you first think. I am looking at going to Jessop ivf in Sheffield (tbh didn’t have a lot of choice due to our location, and didn’t want to be travelling to much, Jessops is already 1hour 20minute away and it’s the second closest :( ). I sorry to hear your first simulation didn’t work, but hopefully once your body’s had time to recover things will be different. Good luck and please keep in touch xx
