Last shot at IVF waylaid by gastro

Hi

I had my last try at IVF a week ago, with FET on Weds last week. On Tuesday night this week i was admitted to hospital with gastroenteritis which I’m almost sure I gave myself from eating undercooked eggs. I’m out of hospital now and I haven’t done a pregnancy test because I’m not meant to for a few more days. But realistically, it’s over. Isn’t it... I had less than 10% chance of success before the gastro... there’s no way the embryo survived that.

I don’t really know why I’m posting. I blame myself for eating the eggs. I feel crap physically. And I can’t believe that this is how the IVF journey ends after five tries. With a whimper.

Sorry... Im feeling really low and I don’t want to put any more on my husband who already is dealing with a lot, not least finding me covered in vomit and crying on the bathroom floor when the gastro hit which was fairly horrid.

I guess if I could I’d just tell him I’m sorry, and he would say it’s fine, but it’s not. :(

Oh @TailFeathers 💜 I'm sorry you've been so poorly. You don't know it hasn't worked, but if it hasn't it is NOTHING you did. You are not to blame.

Early pregnancy is probably the safest time to get most illnesses because the embryo is self-sustaining. Don’t worry about it. If it’s going to happen it will regardless of the sickness

Undercooked eggs will not give you gastro! So you can stop beating yourself up for that.

It is horrible timing, I agree, but there's no definite answer as to whether it would affect the fertility side of things.

I had Noro when I was 16 weeks pregnant and threw up 30 times over one night and ended up in hospital on a drip. I couldn't believe it when a scan showed the baby had survived it.

I had fertility treatment to become pregnant and based very scientifically on me as the only participant in my study I came to the conclusion that my actions during the fertility treatment had no effect on the outcome.

What a horrible time you’ve been through. Now absolutely isn’t the time to beat yourself up about anything. Rest and recover, and what will be will be. Take care and look after yourself 🍰

I agree undercooked eggs won’t give you Gastro - if they have the lion stamp then they are very safe and very unlikely to even give you salmonella! So stop beating yourself up as this was just one of those crappy things.

I also agree that embryos are surprisingly resistant and I think the Gastro will not effect the outcome.

Keeping everything crossed for you and hope you’re being kind to yourself - the emotional and physical trauma of ivf plus Gastro sounds awful xxx

No, the eggs won't have done anything, I've had so many things like that during my cycles, and the nurses keep saying, If it's a viable embryo it will hang on for dear life. An unsuccessful cycle is hard enough, but I've learned not to beat myself up over it.

I've said that so many times - 'there's no way the embryo/egg could have survived that'! It will all be ok xxx
