High prolactin level

I was due to start my first round of Clomid on Monday, literally a few days away and my Dr has just called to say my prolactin blood test level has come back really high (this is my third test for prolactin) First was slightly high, second was literally just in the normal range and this one is 'very' high. I had an MRI scan to check for a prolactinoma back in June and it came back clear. I get nearly all the symptoms from it, including milk lactation.

They want me to be treated for the high prolactin first before I start anything like Clomid so I have got to wait for an appt with my GP to get the meds, then another 6-8 weeks on treatment and then they will review. She said I may have to go back into the clinic for my results which could be another 9 week wait after I finish the meds.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I know in the long run it is best for me and any future pregnancy but I can't help but feel I have taken a massive step back in my journey!

Hi @LaurenN23 I am medicated for high prolactin and you do indeed need to be medicated for it prior to any treatment. Good news is that the medication works very fast indeed - mine was back to normal within 5 weeks. You don't mention the reason for needing clomid however one of the things high prolactin can do is prevent ovulation so don't stop TTC in the meantime. Good luck! xx

@Wesstywoo thank you for responding! I have PCOS so I think my high levels have come from that. I don't ovulate at all and have very irregular cycles. Have you had any luck TTC on the medication? or are you on it for another reason?

They mentioned on the phone capergoline would be likely to be prescribed. I'm glad that it works quickly! I forgot to ask on the phone if we can continue TTC whilst I get treated or if we have to wait until the levels come down, do you know? It's great to hear some reassurance, yet another bump in the road on our TTC journey! xx

@LaurenN23 sadly not yet but I have had to move straight to IVF for other reasons - although it did definitely sort my cycles out. There is nothing to stop you TTC while you are waiting for the blood test - they say 6 weeks to get tested again but I suspect it gets your levels down before that anyway. I'm on cabergoline too, the tablets are tiny and the dose is 1 tablet per week! You have to stop taking it as soon as you get a BFP xx

@Wesstywoo ah okay, wishing you so much luck 💕

Thank you for that! That's really really eased my mind. Just hope something works for us soon! Xx
