Myo-inositol - PCOS and future treatment

Hi ladies,

Started taking myo-inositol about 3.5 weeks ago at the recommended dose for PCOS, so 2g twice per day. I'm also taking one folic acid tablet in the mornings.

Although we are TTC, and have been for a while, my main idea is to try and regain my natural cycles. I've read so many PCOS ladies say things like, "Wow, this is amazing, had my first period in a year 1 week after starting this!!" etc etc, you get the idea.

I haven't come on yet and, whilst I know it's silly, the fact that it isn't showing any signs of working yet is making me concerned that perhaps it is going to be harder to make me ovulate than I had first thought... I gave up on this happening completely naturally a while ago, but now I'm worried that things like Clomid/Metformin aren't going to work for the same reasons that this hasn't worked so far.

Sorry for the long-winded message - any stories of how inositol has worked (or hasn't) for you, and how this has compared to stronger medication like Clomid etc, would be great! Grin

It's very mild and is helpful for controlling sugar levels (that's my understanding, anyway).

What's your diet like? Weight? These things can also have a HUGE impact!

@physicskate I'm within a healthy weight range - BMI around 22-23. I do eat fairly healthily, lots of fruit and veg and virtually all wholegrains. I do have some treats- I just can't bear to be on a strict diet when this has already taken so long! I do have my 2nd fertility appointment in a couple of weeks though, and am half-expecting to be told to completely cut coffee/sugar/anything fun in life... ShockGrin

Try cutting out fruit (full of sucrose), or at least cutting down. High protein, low gi is meant to be good...

Myo inositol working (or not) has absolutely be bearing on anything else working or not!!!

Instead of folic acid take pregnacare max as it contains extra ingrediants to help pcos and egg quality. You also need to visit a gaene as sometimes it’s not pcos causing the problems ttc and could be an implantation problem associated with thyroid / clotting issues

Thanks for the advice ladies. I do love my fruit, but yes, perhaps more veg instead would be wise. Think I am probably making connections where there aren't any - I just really cannot wait for my appointment and to get some medical advice/proper treatment, hopefully!

@Teddybear45 I do definitely have PCOS and have my 2nd fertility appointment very soon, but I do think there are also some other issues (something came up on my HSG for instance) so will be good to find out.

When you do go to your doctor, you may also ask about CoQ10 for PCOS support. Here is some research on the subject: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/cen.13288/full

Thank you @ckc45d10.

Will mention this at my consultation and add it to my list of 'next steps'!

@chichz I took Myo-inositol for around 2.5 months and my GP told me to stop it immediately as it isn't regulated like prescription meds are (you can't be 100% sure what you're taking).

When I came off I had my longest ever cycle of 200 days. However when I was on it I noticed a positive change in my mood, my skin cleared up a little and I wish I'd have given it a little longer to work. It is supposed to take around 3 months to start properly working.

In clinical trials (I looked it up on Google Scholar) it says it's actually more effective than metformin for PCOS sufferers!

Hope that helps a bit. Always ask your GP first xx

@LaurenN23 Thanks - you are definitely meant to give it 3 months, but so many people seem to notice things right away that I think I was just hoping for a miracle!

That's annoying about the extra long cycle and I could deffo do without that! Grin However, I'll see what the specialist says at my appointment. I have very little faith anymore that GPs know what they're talking about with regards to PCOS!

Would you try it again? Sorry, not sure what everyone's situation is yet!

@Chichz I probably would when not TTC. I really couldn't figure out what it was doing, and when you're under time restrictions of TTC it just delayed it more for me. But like I said the positive changes I saw when taking it must have meant something!

Good luck! X

Thank you - it's really good to get other perspectives on it. I just want to feel like I'm doing something myself but ultimately I know that it's going to have to come down to proper, controlled medication. Smile x

I've conceived twice after using infolic for 3 months. It usually takes less than the 3 months to work for me.

Try to keep to a low GI diet and cut out as much sugar as you can.

@Wales81 How exciting! Keep us posted.

@longtimelurkerfirsttimeposter (great name btw) I've heard lots about Inofolic but sooo expensive! I'm also signed up to do the 30 day PCOS diet challenge in November. Will be hard but so interesting to see if there are any changes!

I wasn't eligible for any fertility treatment on the NHS due to low BMI, so it was cheaper for me. Check your PM's, I've messaged you
