HSG - Antibiotic?

Does anyone know what quantity of antibiotics you should have prescribed before a HSG?
Took my prescription to the pharmacy and they've queried the amount of one of the tablets and so just thought I'd ask on here what others had as I can't phone the hospital until Monday.

I've had 2 HSG and wasn't prescribed antibiotics for either and neither particularly hurt - was there a reason you have been told to take them?

I was prescribed them immediately afterwards - I'm afraid I can't remember the dosage in mg BUT I had to take 4 big tablets all at once!

They told me it's because some of the dye stayed in the uterus (presumably some sort of blockage) and can cause an infection.

Good luck!

I also wasnt prescribed antibiotics. They said this is because my "swabs came back negative", although I'm not 100% what that meant .

I was told I have to have the antibiotics with me otherwise they won't perform the HSG.
Guess there must be different routines depending on your location if none of you had to have beforehand Confused

@ChocChipPancake Yeah that's really strange - no mention of taking them beforehand for me!

The leaflet made it sound like the majority of people wouldn't need them afterwards either.

I definitely recommend painkillers; I found it quite uncomfortable. Hopefully yours will be fine as it seems to be when there is a blockage that this is the case! Better to be safe than sorry though, eh. Smile

I didn’t have antibiotics at all when I had mine.

Thanks all for your responses.

I phoned the hospital today and they clarified what I need so I've got my tablets sorted. £18 for two tablets but can't really complain when I won't get a bill after the procedure itself.

I will definitely be taking some pain killers before it as a precaution and my husband will drive me home. Hopefully no reaction or too much discomfort.

Yes I had to have them and they checked I had the antibiotic with me before the procedure. I can’t remember the dose but I can remember it being pretty high. I had to take 4 tablets immediately after. The nurse sat with me and gave me a cup of tea! Take a pad with you for after. It’s a bit grim. Hot water bottle too and take it easy rest of day

Good luck! Sounds like you've got it sorted. Brew
