Genetic testing all abnormal, what happens next!!!!

Hello ladies
This is our first round of IVF, unfortunately due to my age (41) only 2 good eggs were collected the others were not good. Out of the two eggs, one fertilised and frozen to do the genetic testing.

I got a call from the clinic today, they said unfortunately the test results was abnormal (too much chromosome) and they cant implant it.

Going to see the doctor again in two weeks time to discuss the next step.

Im losing hope slowly, I am trying to be positive but i feel utterly crushed.

Has anyone been through this?

I would ask about a study that was done in America - older women who only had PGS abnormal embryos left were part of a study where they agreed to transfer them as it was their last "Hope" if you like. A significant number actually went on to have perfectly healthy babies

PGS testing is only around 60% accurate - they only remove a couple of cells from the outer layer - the placenta - and so could quite easily miss plenty of good cells

The study found that in fact the majority of these abnormal embryos had the ability to "correct" themselves

The human body can be an amazing thing - maybe take a chance on using your last embryo or get a second opinion from another clinic?

I'm a few years younger but was in the same boat low egg count and poor quality embryos. If ur not trying to screen out a genetic illness don't bother with pgs. Try natural ivf with create should give you better quality embryos be prepared for a few rounds though. Good luck.

@Misty999 Thank you. We are not trying to screen out genetic illness, the clinic said because of my age we should do it at the cost of £3k, madness how much these things cost.

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted i did actually read about that after the clinic called me. I think a lot of these clinics try to put the fear in you to make you spend more money.

Unfortunately, by the time you're into your 40s the significant majority of your eggs will be chromosomally abnormal. So, statistically speaking,, if you had only one embryo it's sadly very likely that it would be abnormal. I would personally not see much point in doing PGS in your circumstances, tbh, because you're unlikely to have large numbers of embryos to choose between. It's a lot of money to spend to not really learn much - and, as has been pointed out, they're are some circumstances where embryos may test as abnormal but could still go on to self-correct.

If you look to do another round with your eggs, I'd suggest talking with your clinic about your protocol and what could be done to maximise the quantity and quality of eggs retrieved - bearing in mind that a first cycle is often essentially diagnostic. But I'd also suggest thinking about whether you might consider donor eggs, and learning a bit more about what that night involve.

To echo what misty said I'm actually with Create - they also talked me out of PGS which I had been set on due to recurrent miscarriage - also they won't PGS unless you get 3 or more embryos as it's a bit of a waste of money - sorry your clinic seems to have done you a bit of a disservice x

Similar story but no PGS testing. In short we went down the donor egg route. Hard to get your head around but then amazing to have 10+ 20 year old eggs!
