How long did you bleed for after a natural miscarriage?

Hi all,

I miscarried at 5-6 weeks and the bleeding started 16 days ago. First few days it was very heavy and then lightened off. I was hoping it would have stopped by now but if anything I feel like it’s a little more. Sorry tmi but it’s not loads -more when I wipe-I don’t really need to wear sanitary towels but I do notice it. It’s dark and has little clots.

Is it normal to bleed for so long? Anxious to try naturally but everything I read says don’t when bleeding as it could cause an infection and I don’t want anything else delaying proceedings. I also hope my period returns soon so I can cycle again but not sure if all this bleeding will hold my period off. Thanks everyone.

I would say no longer than a week at less than 6 weeks pregnant - generally one peak day of bleeding/passing the sac/deciduous caste and then would reduce significantly after that

I had surgery for an ectopic 6 week pregnancy on Monday and started with heavy bleeding today after 3 days of spotting

Have you tried taking a pregnancy test? If it's positive there might still be part of the pregnancy left and in which case I would see a doctor about a follow up scan and possible D&C x

The bleeding will delay ovulation and getting cycle back to normal especially if there is still hcg in your system x

Hi mouse I had a very early mc at around 2-3 weeks so 4-5. I didn't stop bleeding until after my next period. It was like a period to start off with then just brown. Sounds similar to what you are going through. I was also worried it was lasting so long and I did tests and the line kept getting fainter. I think there was still a faint line 2-3 weeks after I first started bleeding. Xx

I bled for a month. Eventually I passed a very small piece of tissue and the bleeding stopped. I was only 5 weeks.

Thanks

I had a missed miscarriage at 7 weeks - I had one day of such heavy bleeding I couldn’t leave the bathroom, then just over two weeks of heavy bleeding.

I bled for a week, but probably only 4/5 of red blood. I ovulated I cd22 (usually cd15/16) so it was a bit delayed. I did temp just to get an idea of what was happening. The waiting it so hard.

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted Thanks for your reply. Yep I am being treated by EPU and hcg was down to 50 last Monday and test this morn was now negative. That’s why I’m hoping the bleeding will stop soon.

Thank you all for your replies. May I ask -did you try to conceive while you were still bleeding? Don’t want to miss my ovulation -but also don’t want to risk anything. I’m not getting any fertile symptoms -but perhaps I won’t this cycle or it’s far too early.

@mouse1234567

We used IVF, but were told not to have sex at all whilst I was still bleeding due to the risk of infection. I was far too physically and emotionally traumatised to do anything anyway! It is absolutely nothing like a heavy period.

Hmmm, that does sound like a lot of bleeding based on my experience. I've miscarried twice at around 6.5 weeks and for me both times were like an extremely heavy period. About 10 days of bleeding altogether, 5-6 of which were very heavy with clotting and the rest lighter.

However, I'm sure it's something which is different for everyone and looking at PPs it seems your experience isn't unusual. Do give your GP a ring if you are worried though.

I'm really sorry you're going through this Flowers
