Confused about FET embryo age - help!

Hi everyone

This may be a silly question but I’m confused!

If you have an embryo frozen on day 5, then it is defrosted overnight and implanted the following morning, is it considered five or six days old?

Thanks!

Mine was thawed the morning of my transfer.

@LillyLeaf that doesn't really answer the question!

My understanding is it is still 5 days old. Remember embryos can be frozen for years so they wouldn't age.

My day 5 blastocyst was taken out the night before the transfer and defrosted...certainly by the time of the transfer (late morning) it was hatching out and more like day 6 than day 5, but I guess technically speaking it might depend on the exact timings of freezing, defrosting and replacement. My clinic said it only takes a few hours for the actual defrosting and re-expansion, so any time after that is further development

Thank you ladies!

That’s the same dilemma i have! I understand they don’t age whilst frozen, it was more the overnight thing I was unsure about

My little embryo was taken out the day before transfer and put into the culture.....so I guess it is 6 days old really!

Yes about 5.5-6 days old if thawed and then cultured overnight. Hope you get a good outcome.

Some clinics like to implant 6 day embryos. Mine, however, doesn’t like to take that risk as it’s possible for even viable 5 day embryos to collapse outside the womb. Mine will defrost the embryos only a few hours before the transfer.

Wow Teddybear, I didn’t know that!!! I’m glad I didn’t know that before the transfer or I would have been even more nervous 😂

Good luck with your transfer!
