Clomid/Ovulating - Very Confused :(

Hi there,

I am a 31 year old female and i have finished my 1st round of Clomid (3 months). I attended the clinic for a scan and thankfully i was given Clomid for another 3 months. When the doctor done my scan, she advised i was about to ovulate (happy days!!). I was little confused about this as my period was due the following week but i thought maybe i was a little all over the place as i had one month free of clomid. I went home and done the Clearblue ovulation tests and for 5 days i got a flashy face (again happy days). On Sunday, i got my period but here is the thing, i still got a flashy face that morning and i done it again last night and i got a non flashy face(peak time).

I am so confused at the moment, as i dont understand how i can be at peak fertility when i am on my time of the month. p.s its not spotting !

You should not use OPKs whilst on clomid.

Clomid causes the release of LH into the bloodstream so the ovulation predictor test will detect this LH. This can provide you with a false positive result, when you are not actually ovulating (hence all those smileys over 5 days).

They should be seeing you regularly to ensure that clomid is actually doing what its supposed to be doing. Intermittent monitoring is not ideal at all.

They should be telling you at the appointment what size your follicles are. They grow 2-3 mm a day and most OB's like them to be a minimum of 17mm (from memory) before they trigger. They should be triggering you when they grow to a good size so you can know for sure that you're ovulating and have sex. Otherwise they could grow to 30mm for example and you'd be having sex every day never knowing.

After you trigger, you have sex for 3 days. Then you have a day 28 blood to check your progesterone and confirm ovulation.

You'd be lucky if they monitor you that closely. I had to beg for a blood test after 3 months.

The best way to detect ovulation is to have both blood tests and internal ultrasound scans done on a regular basis to see if an egg has left the ovary.

I'm not disagreeing that it's the best way, I'd love to have that. I'm saying that it's difficult to get NHS to provide it.

Thanks for your replies, I was told by my gyne to use ovulation tests and have only been offered a scan every 3 months ... to say I'm worried i have been doing it wrong is understatement, but , I am glad I asked you guys,as I can now go back and question this xx

Hi there I used OPKs with Clomid and found it was difficult to work out when ovulation was on the first cycle but did settle down slightly by the second. I got pregnant on the third. Didn't have any blood tests or follicle size measurements as all done through the NHS so was more of a case of getting on with it....! 😀 Good luck x
