So I've got an appointment to see my GP about infertility. Me and my husband are going but we don't know anyone who's had any issue so have no idea what to expect. Any advice would be amazing!! Smile

Hi, for the first appointment I went in my own. Explained how long we had been trying. The gp organised 21 day bloods and advised that my husband get a sperm analysis done. We both have different doctors. I called his gp explained what had been said and got the paperwork for sperm analysis. The gp referred us to the assisted conception unit before we had any results back. She was of the opinion that as they are the experts and would order any more tests that we would require. I thought the gp would ask 100 and 1 questions but didn't. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't expect a great deal from my experience. We went separately. They got me to have my bloods done at 2 different points in the month (Sorry can't remember which days in the cycle). DP went and they sent him for sperm analysis. Went back weeks later for results and because of our age, how long we'd been trying and that there was nothing wrong with the tests they referred us to fertility specialist at hospital.
Not being able to conceive was one of the worst things I've ever experienced. However, we now have 2 children both conceived naturally and it's hard to remember those days. I hope the same happens for you xx

We saw the gp in October who arranged a day 2-5 and day 21 blood test, thyroid and hormone tests, rubella testing plus a swab for me and sperm analysis for my OH. Wont go into the the fact that the referral only went off last week - lots of cock ups by the gp and my first appointment with the clinic isnt until july!

Thank you all, I thought I'd have to take him with me the first time so that's helpful x

Things might move slightly quicker if you go together. They can arrange both your tests at the same time. They'll sort semen analysis for him and check lots of bloods for you, check if you've had rubella jab maybe arrange a scan depending on symptoms etc.

How long have you been ttc?

Oh and a chlamydia swab for you. Gp has to have a whole battery of tests back before referral to fertility unit.
Think I originally went to gp in June, loads of tests, fertility appointment in sept, surgery in Jan and now waiting for AF so I can start meds to help me ovulation.

@squirrelnutkins1 we have been trying for over a year, yes I'm thinking of going together so we can get things moving. Would they test for chlamydia if I was tested before and there's no chance of it? Thank you for your advice. Good luck in your journey x

I think it's just a routine battery of tests they have to have before referral so I'd imagine you'd have to have the swab again. There was no chance for me having it either but still had to be tested.

Thank you. You too. It's a rocky road but hopefully we'll all get there in the end!

Thank you everyone for sharing your own experiences. I had day and day 21 tests and a whole bunch or hormones about 6 months ago but by the sounds of it will need them again. Will see if DH is free to come with me if it might speed things up. Will keep you posted!

@disney91 how are you getting on? Had my day 21 bloods this morning, although they were ok last year so not expecting anything to come up. DH has to give a sample but some weird log in system and appointments only released on a fri afternoon and he is on a stag do! Waiting for a scan apt too.

@MuddyElephant we went last week and I'm having bloods taken next week to check if I'm ovulating but as it's only been 15months they won't do anything else until we have been trying for two years. The doctor was positive and say from what we were saying there's nothing wrong but in 8 months we can go and have further tests if we need to. Fingers crossed for your partner! X

@disney91 glad you have at least got started with the tests. Our doc said she wouldn't really worry before 18 months had gone past but worth doing the basic tests. Also interestingly said not to try and time dtd as research has shown the added stress/pressure is harmful to chances. Keeping a loose eye on when my fertile window is but not going crazy! Good luck over the next few months Smile
