Positive test after IVF Abroad, next steps?

AniSL · 27/01/2019 10:13

Hi all

Does anyone know what the care should be after a positive pregnancy test from IVF abroad?
I have read varying and conflicting pieces of advice. Some say tell GP as soon as you have a positive, others suggest waiting. Some say refer to a midwife but others say that the care would have to be consultant lead.

Even under consultant led care, you still see a midwife first. They're the ones who set up the appropriate pathway, whatever that may be. You can see your GP to let them know, but most trusts require self-referrals to midwives now. CongratulationsSmile

Congratulations!
Normally if you tell your GP receptionist they will tell you at what stage to book in with midwife. In the practice I work in they take your details after 8 weeks and midwife sees you between 10-12 weeks but this varies between areas it seems. Generally it is only shared care with consultant if you have a condition that may affect pregnancy or your pregnancy becomes high risk, it isn’t automatically consultant led because pregnancy was via IVF.

Thanks littlemiss and bringback, I told my GP who referred to midwife who said she wpuld see me about weeks 8-10. I think thats an awfully long time aftet a positive test especially since we had 2 blasts put back

That's when booking appointments normally happen. If you particularly want to do something else in the meantime, you could always have an early scan done privately, though.

And congratulations!

Congratulations, I saw my GP at 6.5 but just to trigger the midwife appts, saw the midwife at the hospital for the first time at 10.5 weeks then had my scan at 13 weeks, I did however pay for private HCG and scans before then

Hi all

Thank you so much, just spoke to the midwife who advised that as I have had two put back and because I am 37, they will see me at week 6 for my first appointment with the midwife and first scan at 8 weeks. They said that at 8 weeks I will meet the midwife and consultant and a decsion can be made there as to whether it will be midwife led or consultant led.

@AniSL massive congratulations. I'm so pleased for you.

I had a private scan at seven weeks and then went into standard care, but I only had one blast returned. Looks like you've got it all sorted now though.

Congratulations! I had twins and had first scan at 8 weeks- not much point in having one earlier tbh as it is difficult to see heartbeats.

Thanks both. Si1lver we have been on this journey for a while haven't we.
Yes the midwife said that by 8 weeks they would be able to detect heartbeat and want me in as soon as that date hits. Its standard practice for for those who meet the similar criteria as me apparently in my Borough

Feels like an age AniSL. I was wondering how you were getting on the other day.

I'm 40 weeks now, I often think I wouldn't have made it this far without your spreadsheet.

I was wondering how you were doing too. 40 weeks wow congrats, you must be feeling ready to explode.

Our first cycle was stopped due to no blasts at day 5, second we got 4 4AAs and all on ice back last year, we did our FET and got a BFP last week. Just been to Wimpole Street to get HcG bloods done - very cheap thankfully. So now its just waiting until my 8 week scan. Not getting any hopes up until week 12.

But awesome news for u

Hi guys

Just thought I would update you all, the specialist midwife called and advised as I was on aspirin which was prescribed by my clinic, they want to do a 7 week scan as if they detect a heartbeat the aspirin needs to stop

I understand your caution, will keep everything crossed for you!
I've visited IVI in Spain and now planning DE treatment there. We've had to wait a bit longer due to sperm DNA fragmentation issues but hoping to go in the summer. Just plodding along and being as healthy as possible in the meantime. DH should see urologist in a few months for repeat tests and we'll take it from there.
Half tempted to go to Greece reading your news 😉 but were really happy with IVI so will see how it goes.

Interesting that they want to stop your aspirin as soon as you get a heartbeat on scan, @AniSL. My clinic protocol is to stop the clexane injections at 12 weeks but carry on the aspirin till 28 weeks.

I rang and left a message for the midwivesnon Monday but they’ve not called me back yet (I’m 5 weeks today) we’re going away on Monday and won’t be back till March 13th in the afternoon so I’m not sure what will happen if they want early appointments or if they send me a letter after Monday for an appointment while I’m away.

My first beta hCG (7dpt) last Wednesday was 99 and was expecting my blood test on Tuesday this week to be around 800 but, it had come back as 2,445!! Looking more and more likely that both my little mebryos have stuck good and fast!!

How are you feeling?

AniSL · 31/01/2019 11:55

Wow what a count, definitely seems like both decided to stick.
Yes both the midwife and my clinic in Greece have said the same thing. Also means I get to find out definitively if twins or a singleton.

I am good, no symptoms yet so plodding along, I just want to get to my 12 weeks because all those people that DH told we were having IVF are all asking me when will we go transfer, got sooooo fed up and just shot DH a glare - he gets it now lol.

You are on quite a journey, look after yourself

Thank you. I will look after myself - and you do too.

I will speak to my clinic once I get the scan done (still trying to arrange it at the moment) and see if they want me to stop the aspirin. Not even heard back from the midwives since leaving a message on Monday lunchtime so might try calling again today. We are off on Monday lunchtime so want to know where I stand before then!!

Managed to get the 6 weeks scan organised for when I am in Bermuda - became a bit of a mission on the prt of the clinic we contacted - their managing director contacted the clinics insurers to ensure they were covered under the circumstances; then she had to discuss the case with the island’s chief obstetrician as they need a registered Dr to ‘sign off’ on a request and she’s agreed to do that for us!! The only snag is the cost but we’ve got the money so can afford it and will just close my eyes when I settle the bill!!

Roll on February 12th and finding out how many little apple pips we’ve got developing inside!!

Also got Thursday’s blood results and, once again, they are excellent at 5,344 at 3+1 post ET and at 5 weeks according to my dates!!

Yes weird how some clinics differ. Same with areas and nhs

I’m KENT and everyone I know had the glucose test as think 28w

Friend in different country wasn’t given a test. Mw said no need unless wee shows protein

I also did injections whole preg and 6w after but think more due to previous blood clot I had 12yrs ago

Hope scan goes well and for us at our first scanthe scan lady suddenly turned up a dial and we heart the heartbeat at 7w. We both blubber

Bermuda ahhhhhh man, I get stuck in London working and breathing in toxic fumes. Relaxing is what you need to be doing

Blondeshavemorefun yes its crazy how much it varies clinic to clinic. I have always maintained that none of them know fully about fertility.
Mine gave me lentogest injections just in case I have a bleed but apart from that just the Progynova, Cyclogest, Aspirin and Folic.
