My partner and I are currently seeking advice concerning PGD.

My partner has a genetic disease called FSHD and we are wanting to have a child without passing on the disease.

We have recently had an appointment and they told us about a clinic in London and Nottingham.

I am hoping that someone out there is able to provide some advice and just tell us your story if you have been through the process.

Thank you xxx

I haven't been through the process but know a bit about it. You go through the usual IVF, have your eggs collected and fertilised with your partner's sperm. The embryos are then biopsied and frozen. The cells that have been removed, are then tested for the genetic condition. If any are found not to have it, they are thawed and you have 1 or 2 transferred (depending on your age, quality of the embryos and preferences).

I have a little knowledge on the process from my own research plus we have had an appointment with a councillor.

We are just unsure of which clinic is best to use.

We are hoping to start ASAP as we've been told it can take between 9 and 12 months.

I've had PGS rather than PGD but the process is broadly the same

If the clinic in Nottingham is CARE then they have one of the top genetics labs in the country

Is the one in London Guys?

Yes the one is London is Guys and I'm not sure about the Nottingham one. I thought I'd ask people rather than just researching because I prefer to get people's opinions that just what a website tells me x

There's a thread for PGD cyclers on fertility friends where a lot of women go to Guys for PGD, who would I'm sure be able to offer lots of helpful advice x

My friend did her nhs round at Guys. First cycle there was nothing to transfer. Second cycle resulted in her wee boy. She wad generally pleased but found it a bit disorganised (as I think most places are to be honest). She then had a private round in Czech Republic (Reprofit), it worked and she has just had a baby girl. Good luck x

I would say for PGD that as you need a probe to be developed, you want to go with a clinic with a very experienced genetics programme. Some clinics will offer newer techniques like karomapping for PGD.

@Scottishgirl85 was your friend having PGD? I know reprofit does array CGH for PGS but I didn't think they did PGD for inherited diseases?

Pretty sure it was pgd as her mum had a condition that she has a 50% chance of passing on, although she's never told me what the condition was and I haven't wanted to ask. I'm not too familiar with the techniques though.

The disease my partner has is also a 50% chance.

The more advice I get the more I'm thinking we will travel that couple more house and go to guys. It won't be so bad getting the train down for appointments.

Thanks everyone so far. Love getting people's opinions and hearing their stories x
