Disappointed with Egg Collection Today :-(

sheikhandbake · 14/03/2017 15:11

At home recovering after egg collection earlier today. At my last scan the consultant thought we would get 10 to 12 eggs retrieved however we only got 8.

On top of this 3 are quite small so they don't know if they are fully mature. Because of this the embryologist recommended ICSI whereas before everyone was happy for us just to do IVF.

I'm feeling really down, deflated, sore and like we will never have a baby at this rate.

I've never had so much as a whiff of a BFP even after 6 months on Clomid despite having good sized follicles and successfully ovulating on every cycle (whilst on Clomid that is)

Would love some positive stories right now Smile

I haven't started yet but aim to do minimum stimulation ivf, where the aim is to only retrieve 2-3 eggs. After researching I think there would only be a handful of strong eggs no matter how many eggs they collect, so having fewer makes it more likely they'll transfer a good embryo, rather than putting it in the freezer for a fet and picking a different one. Just my opinion, but it really is quality over quantity. Wishing you all the best x

Thanks for that Scottishgirl - I live in a country where you can't store embryos so it wouldn't make much sense to overstimulate me and have embryos we can of nothing with..

If we are unsuccessful this time I think we will look at doing IVF abroad where embryo storage can be done. I think a fresh cycle every time will be a bit daunting and scarily expensive!

Scottish is right. Quality counts above all else. I did ivf in 2014. I was a poor responder so only got 2 eggs. 1 embryo, 1 bfp, who is now 2 years old.

The clinic don't freeze - so what happens to them remainder and what a waste :(

And nothing wrong with icsi. I think all ivf should be icsi tbh

It only takes one, OP! The others are right - quality not quantity. For what it's worth, my clinic told me that 7 is the average number of eggs collected, so having 8 is absolutely fine. Good luck!

They collected 25 from me, of which 7 went on to day 5 blasts - and all had to be frozen as I developed OHSS. If you're not able to freeze yours then that would've be a complete waste. Fingers crossed for you Flowers

I had loads of eggs collected (17 first cycle 21 second). 2 years of treatment and still nothing so number collected doesn't mean anything - quality not quantity is very, very true

I only had 5 eggs collected, of which only 2 survived.

She's now 14months ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Good luck and try to stay positive x

I had 8 eggs and am 26 weeks pregnant with twins.. we didn't get to freeze any and these two were early blastos on day 5 so technically behind! There is hope xx

At 42 I had only 3 eggs collected and was so disappointed. Could risk going to blast as we had with previous cycles, where I always got 10/11 embryos. This time I genuinely gave up hope until lab rang. 2 had fertilised and both were put back on day 3. Ds is now 13 months, and the smiliest little wrecking ball!

Star couldn't risk going to blast

I only had 6 collected. 3 made it to 5d blasts. 1 transferred (37 weeks now) and 1 frozen.
It's a cliché - but it honestly just takes 1. Xx

I felt the same as you at EC- we only had 2 and one didn't divide enough to be transferred in the end only had 1 egg! The odds were totally stacked against us but it worked and we now have a baby girl! Grin Good luck!

Same here two ivf cycles four eggs collected at each cycle. Second ivf resulted in my now five year old girl. Both went to blast.

Thanks everyone, you have helped me calm down no end!

Just had the call from the embryologist.

6 eggs were suitable for ICSI in the end and 5 fertilised normally.

Now just hoping that we have some good quality ones that make it to day 5.

I'm shaking now and my nerves are frayed, I'll be climbing the walls for the next few day!

I agree with PP ICSI is just another helping hand not a negative. I'm sat here with my 8 week old ICSI baby snuggled up after her milk.

Keep thinking about all the chances you have with the eggs they did collect rather than those that got away. You sound like you are in a good position. Best of luck.

Just read your post - I remember crying when speaking to the embryologist when they said they were leaving them to progress to 5 day blastocyst. The emotional side of it all is intense.

Just had the call from the embryologist - We now have 4 embryos, 2 x 2 cells, 1 x 4 cell (partially fragmented) and 1 x 6 cell (?!).

We are having a day 3 transfer tomorrow - I'm gutted as I know this means its less likely to work..

Best of luck.

This is the hardest part in my opinion so try to keep your mind busy as much as you can. I completely lost it on about day 10 of the 2 week wait. Didn't test til the proper day though. Try to remember that you and your OH are in this together- lots of cuddles.

I need donor eggs, and am currently trying to scrape together the £8k we'll need to pay for a private cycle due to the shortage of NHS donor eggs. I would give anything to be in your position right now. Stay positive - try to see it as an exciting journey, you have a decent number of eggs and there's every chance one of them could become the baby you've dreamed of . . . you're on your way to being a mummy! x

Ziggy look abroad. Prices vary per clinic but prob looking at £5k rather then £8k like in uk

Hi Blondeshavemorefun - yes, definitely looking at that as an option, however I'm self-employed so if I spend days here and there travelling I'll lose income to the point where it works out about the same . . . Confused

BOth df and I are se. One of the reasons we chosen madrid as could fly in and out in a day tho using my own eggs

If doing de then Obv you and partner would visit /chat

He would give a sample then the clinic would match your cycle with donor - or use frozen eggs and mix with partner sperm and you fly over day 3/5 For transfer

Doesn't need to be abroad days on end

Blondeshavemorefun - definitely an option, just haven't researched it properly yet. But from what you've said, it sounds like it would make sense to go to somewhere like Madrid . . . I read that the Czech Republic is a good option, as is the Ukraine . . . I need to study up!

Plan A is to see if we can have our NHS funding transferred to a private clinic (apparently under certain circumstances some CCGs allow this) and if not then we'll invoke Plan B and go private.

How are you getting on? What stage are you at? Best wishes to you!

And the OP . . . how are you doing? x
