Hi,

My husband has a zero sperm count, too- we discovered this in July 2015. A few months later, we had a referral to a fertility specialist (not actually an andrologist, but a general fertility specialist) and she organised an ultrasound scrotal scan, hormonal blood tests and a karyotype blood test. The scrotal scan came back normal, as did the hormonal blood tests. If hormonal blood tests come back normal, that suggests that the azoospermia is obstructive, rather than due to insufficient hormone levels to produce sperm. When his karyotype blood test came back, we found out that he is a carrier of the cystic fibrosis gene, which is a common cause of obstructive azoospermia. Men with this gene typically lack a vas deferens, so basically the sperm are being produced, they just can't get out. When we found this out, I was also tested for the gene and was not a carrier. If I was a carrier, we would have a high chance of having a child with cystic fibrosis.

These tests took 2.5 months, I think and we were then referred for ICSI with surgical sperm retrieval. My husband had the retrieval in Feb 2016 and we had our first treatment cycle in July 2016. It didn't work, so we had another in October 2016, which unfortunately didn't work either. We had a good response to the cycle and got good embryos, so we don't really know why it didn't work, but think it might have something to do with my Thyroid function which we found out is under active a few weeks ago. So we are treating this and having another cycle hopefully next month.

I hope this helps- let me know if I can help with anything! Good luck x

Thank you very much for your reply. I am so sorry you need to go through such a heartache. I hope you third cycle will be successful. My husband has high FSH so we know there is something wrong. I am hoping we will get all the tests done and finally know where we stand.

Thank you again xxx

Hi, my dh also has 0 sperm. We had successful M-tese in December.

We had numerous appointments, ultrasound and blood tests (lots of them).
My dh had a slightly higher than normal fsh and a varicocele although they say a varicocele doesn't affect fertility but everything else came back ok. We had all of this done at UCLH near Bond Street.

I hope your both doing ok x
