Pregnant naturally after 5 failed ivf cycles

Hi all those girls ttc, I wanted to share my experience. We spontaneously conceived ds1 after one year when I was 32. When I was 34, and ds1 was 13 months, we started ttc. No joy at all, and we started ivf 2 years later, when I was 36. My egg quality turned out to be poor, and the next two years were full of heartbreak. All my other tests were normal, just poor quality eggs that either wouldn't fertilise properly, or embryos that wouldn't grow. We started to explore adoption and egg donation. Then, I read about coenzyme q10 and took 1200mg daily for three months, using an expensive version from Holland and Barrett. Dh took 400mg daily. ( I had read various anecdotal experiences, and reassured myself via the mayo clinic website that unlikely to be harmful). I am now 29 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby boy.
I am a hospital doctor and have come to realise, painfully, that many ivf strategies are not based on strong clinical evidence of efficacy. I have been reassured however by endocrinologists that I am unlikely to suffer adverse health effects relating to my ivf treatment. If you are ttc it.may be worth a try. Lots and lots of luck.and good wishes.

How lovely - congratulations! Good luck with the last months of your pregnancy. Five IVF cycles must have been really difficult (and expensive). Where would you recommend for more info on co-enzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10 is recommended in a book called "it starts with the egg" written by a biochemist and lots and lots of research trials and evidence are cited throughout the book. I have been taken it for 2 months now.

Hello, I saw this thread pop up again. I saw my IVF doc this morning and asked him about co q10, he said 'we're not convinced it helps but it definitely doesn't hurt'. So I've bought some, apparently the version with ubiquinol is easier to absorb than the more common version ubiquinone (this was Dr Google advice not an actual doctor)

The other thing the doc said today was that high dose folic acid is looking promising to improve egg quality when IVF stimulation starts. I hadn't heard that, I thought high dose folic acid was used when there have been previous spinal cord problems. But he says they are starting to recommend it for all patients because it helps the chromosomes in the eggs to sort themselves out properly. But you can't buy it over the counter, it's prescription only. Something else to think about.

Hi, you took 1200mg per day? So, ten of the 120mg pills or did you find higher dose pills? Great story - thanks! I'm 34 with high FSH/LH ratio, suggesting low ovarian reserve. TTC number 1.

You can get higher dose but if you get the body ready ubiquinol you need much less. I recommend reading "it starts with the egg" for dosage guidelines.

Also for folic acid I take "folate" which is body ready folic acid. Body diesnt need to convert it so you absorb more

Hi girls, alibaba81, I bought 200mg pills from Holland and Barrett, this was around 32 quid per bottle of 30 so was around 6 quid a day...but they do seem to have regular offers, sometimes 2 for 1 ( I still take 200mg most days, just seems to give me more energy and general well being). I'm afraid I haven't looked into whether they are ubiquinone or Ubiquinol. The furthest I got was the mayo clinic website, and a few fertility doctor statements, lugo14 has done more research. I guess I stuck with holland and barrett because I wanted a reputable supplier with no contamination. Good luck to everyone xxx
