G8 Demonstrations.

Is it just me or is there a shocking lack of interest on the national TV news about what's happening up here in Central Scotland. I know that the Olympic decision is important - and I'm really glad that London won - but ffs there have been riots in the centre of one of the UK's cities, 70 people have been arrested, a major motorway has been closed by protestors and rioters have tried to blockade the centre of Edinburgh and there's been hardly more than a couple of minutes on the news about it and that's after waiting 15 minutes for the countdown to the Olympic decision (ITV's lunchtime news). Can you imagine if this happened in Woking or London or somewhere else in the Home Counties, we've never hear the end of it for months. Really pi$$es me off.

Not just you- I find it absolutely staggering. Even before the decision was made abut the Olympics that's all they were talking about. Grr.

I live in Stirling and can't get news of what's happeneing on my doorstep for hearing news of the Olympics (very pleased for them BUT...)

I think the PM needs to say something about it. Without being blatant, the government have encouraged Geldof et al in the hope that it will help them convince the US that something needs to be done about Africa.
Now Blair needs to come out and say that the majority of people are exercising their right to peacefully protest and that these people are a minority of thugs. Otherwise it degrades the whole movement.
These are the same sort of people who go to football matches just to cause trouble.
Arrest them and take their bloody masks off so everyone can see their cowardly face!!!!

I agree ladies and feel if the summit was in england then it would have been a different story( SORRY TO SOUND BITTER)

All day we really have only had snippets of news, I have been listening to forth one all day for the updates.

What about the Live8 edinburgh gig no live viewing have to listen on radio only.

Gets me a bit mad at times you know anyone else feel this way or just me

Without a doubt there us no interest anywhere Tabitha. I posted 2 or 3 times during the day and got comments from no-one who didn't live within 40 miles of Stirling. Obvioulsy didn't effect anywhere important like, eh East End of London.

Boo hiss.

I mean my goodness Burger King has been trashed...

I have started another thread about our concerns about getting to Glasgow airport on Friday if today's disturbances are anything to go by. We are living near a school that has been taken over by the police. Vanloads going back and forth past our front door. Barking police dogs and whizzing helicopters. Even saw Airforce One.

It is amazing what is priority on the news.

do you think it's all going to continue for the next couple of days?

Report
miam · 06/07/2005 18:59

They have warned everyone to steer clear of Stirling town centre this evening. There are loads of police vans passing us and helicopters every few minutes, so looks like the trouble will continue.

Hi miam!

I crossed town in the car twice this afternoon no problem. In fact, very quickly because everyone else was staying in!

Sky news had LOTS of coverage it this afternoon - in fact DH was home early from work and was hoping to watch the 're-run' of the Olympic announcement - but they didn't even have the 4pm news headlines as they were covering Gleneagles and the Protests......

miam · 06/07/2005 19:06

lol - they must have know you were coming!!!

They are setting up road blocks outside the ecovillage again (2 miles down the road from us) and absolutely loads of police were at the Kincardine bridge setting up a road block there too. My poor sister got barricaded in at work today because of the rioting. She was not happy as she was meant only to be working half day lol!! They were woken at 4am with the helicopters (they live in Bannockburn) so she is NOT feeling very sympathetic with the protesters....

tassis · 06/07/2005 19:11

Yeah, we live very close to bannockburn so very noisy helicopteres last night. Dh and a friend who was stying over were awake since 4/3/2am (seems to have gotten earlier as the day's gone on!!).

Lots of helicopters at the moment. I don't like it at all.

Don't have Sky, but very glad they were covering it. Feel a bit ignored by the media...

There was a bit on the news tonight, but it really has not been covered much atall. It is scary being so close though... can't see how what they are doing can possibly help their cause.

Hopefully they will block Stirling off completely tomorrow morning so that I won't be able to get to work lol!!

Helicopters everywhere at the moment in Stirling.

Tassis - I went into Town after DH came home from Edinburgh to get some tea at Marks and there was nothing happening at all. Most shops outside the Thistle/Marches were closed - lots of windows getting boarded-up. No buses running and hoards of dogs & police in full-on gear (minus the shields thou'). All a bit surreal really.

Report
tassis · 06/07/2005 19:19

but the main thing is that you got to marks for your tea!
