Here
Did anyone see this last night?
I just wanted to start a discussion on Berlusconi and his policy (in conjunction with Libya) for dealing with migrants.
If you didn't see the programme, here are the jists of it.
Apparently 40,000 people enter Italy every year from the Meditteranean. Berlusconi has shook hands with Gidaffi on a deal which means they will jointly patrol the Med and turn back migrants on boats and keep them in Libya until Libya decided what to do with them. Since this policy has been introduced, the migrant problem from the Med into Italy has dropped by 90% and trade between Libya and Italy has increased by 40%.
Opposition to Berlusconi are calling it a Nazi policy. Migrants when they reach Libya are separated by which country they come from and are bunched up into detention centres. Last nights programme showed a 14 year old boy locked up. The detention centres are like prisons. All migrants are treated appallingly and no consideration is given to whether they are seeking asylum through political reasons or for economic reasons. When the migrants are returned to their own countries, they often face prison, or worse.
Anyone want to discuss? I'd like to understand it better. I think it is a horrendous policy and very scary. Apparently the policy goes against all regulations that European countries have agreed to.
