"Police also arrested Cartrain's 49-year-old father, who they suspected of harbouring the pencils."

LOL @ harbouring pencils!!

I can't really type what I think of DH's art on here!

Sounds like they have a lot in common.
Perhaps they are in it together.
Lots of lovely publicity!

what a bloody stupid man. He is so far up his own arse he is in serious danger of turning inside out!

He has zero talent! But, I blame those fools around him who have orgasms over a pile of crap littered around.

Oh, it's art. erm, no. It's shite.

Reminds me of those art 'experts' who were shown a picture, a 'modern art' picture, and they were enthusing about it, interpreting it, saying how marvellous it was..then it was revealed that the artist was an elephant

Confirmed to me, once and for all, that is is a huge pile of bollocks and they are all poncy bastards who like to make themselves look important.

Cartrain is using the pencils to sign his own graffitti art.

Agree Greeny, now this lad has got some talent and initiative

A few words from the artist:
"People that think graffiti is a nuisance should open their eyes. Graffiti doesn't tell people to buy crap they don't want, unlike advertising. I consider my work artistic and creative, not mindless rubbish designed to annoy people.
"Councils are very quick to tell you how much graffiti costs but not so quick to tell you how much they get from advertising."

Kinda makes Hirst come across as a bit of a humourless twat, doesn't it? Especially as it's a follow-up to him suing the kid for unauthorised reproduction of the diamond skull thing.

Wonder if Boots could sue Hirst for unauthorised reproduction of a pharmacy?

This is very funny.

We have a spare packet of Caran D'Ache here is that would help Mr Hirst...

He handed over the collages and agreed to pay Hirst the £200 profits he had made.

I think Cartrain's work is far far better anyway I actually really like it.

wotzy - do you think I could get very rich?

I also have quite a bit of hair in my plughole (my sink plughole - that is not a euphamism btw!). Perhaps I could offer that to the Tate as well?

I laughed out loud at the ransom note:

"He then created a "wanted"-style poster that read: "For the safe return of Damien Hirst's pencils I would like my artworks back that DACS and Hirst took off me in November. It's not a large demand... Hirst has until the end of this month to resolve this or on 31 July the pencils will be sharpened. He has been warned."

I think Greensleeves has it spot on. He is a pillock.

I am not a big fan of Hirst but to lump all modern art together as shite is a touch reactionary. If you don't like it fine but I hate the attitude that art is somehow phoney and useless.

Sounds to me like Damien Hirst doesn't have a sense of humour.

Report
noddyholder · 07/09/2009 09:56

Its all art you'd think Mr Hirst would see it that way!I love his work but he is being ridiculous.I hate when people say all modern art is cr*p and they could do it!Why don't you then he's a bloody millionaire!

Report
LizzyBirdsworth · 07/09/2009 20:20

Noddyholder, I intend to create a piece for the Saatchi gallery. Resting upon a plinth will be a Louis Vuitton handbag. Nestled in the bag will be a turd. (obviously a plastinated poo, to prevent pong)

This frightfully iconic piece will be entitled "Bag o' Shite".

Do you think it will catch on?

Wotzy, love that link. Jolly well done to all the artists who have contributed collages in protest!

Hirst really needs to get over himself. Even if you think he's a good artist, it's a box of mass-produced pencils, FFS, that were put there by someone working for Hirst in a piece that is not unique. He can afford to go out and buy a million more, the silly, precious, self-important sod.

Man has no sense of humour at all. He should be prosecuted for wasting police time. And everyone who reported a crime that day and were told the Met were too busy to turn up should sue him.

(Was fascinated to learn Lauren Child of Charlie and Lola used to be one of the people who actually creates Hirst's work, btw.)

And how come irony's the thing when they describe their own work, but we aren't allowed to employ irony in response? How come these poseurs go on and on about the interaction between artist and audience and then get pissed off when the audience does actually interact?

Was on the South Bank with ds recently. Someone's wrapped all the trees in polka dotted fabric, white dots on red background. Looks quite nice. All the wrappings are covered in signatures - ds wanted to add his, so I let him. Just before noticing a sign that says 'this is a work of ART, leave it alone' or words to that effect.

FFS, it's sheets of cloth printed with big polka dots. You can run off some more if you need to. And I thought it was nice that people were responding. Artist has an awful lot to learn about Londoners if they think that's bad... (Can't see David Blaine coming back in a hurry. )

Absolutely pathetic. Some of these artists get far too precious about their artwork.

Damien Hirst has lost all credibility; he now comes across as a copmlete buffoon whose only real interest in art is the money he can gain from it. As for all the police time used crime what about all the poor sods who were victims of crime on that particular day?.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 10/09/2009 13:55

So what if they are rare "Faber Castell dated 1990 Mongol 482 Series?" They are still pencils - as functional and mundane as before they were displayed ? and I cannot conceive how someone can justify pricing them at five hundred grand. But then that might be because I just ?don?t get? a lot of contemporary art.
