I grew up in Clacton, spent most of my summers in that sea. The beach I used to go on shelved quite sharply - more than any I can think of I've been to since, come to think - so the water gets deep really quickly. And because of clay (I think) the water is almost opaque. Its easy to imagine how it could happen if you were only used to gently shelving beaches.

I live quite close to there and was at that beach with my family that day when the search started. It is so horrible and I can't stop thinking about it. I also have a DD-10 who was swimming there. I feel so terrible for her family and friends.
