any link to story?

no need for visitors to be crb checked cos they're not left alone with the children

Report
Tamarto · 16/07/2009 19:54

They are being expected to pay for it themselves.

They're being expected to pay sixty quid out of their own pocket in order to go in a read to children for free. Ridiculous - they're not left alone with the children- what exactly could they get up to?

authors

lexilex, don't get your point - they haven't got anything to hide. They just think it's absolutely ludicrous, as do I! They present to groups of 30-odd children, with teachers and TAs present.

We have lost all sense of persepctive on this.

It's very silly. It is not as if a visiting author is every going to be alone with the children.

what do you help with?

parent helpers may be on their own with children at times - working one-to-one or in small groups - and have the opportunity to build up relationships with children, something no author is going to do

yawn at whole idea of the vetting forum - quite agree with the authors pov, not just at paying the £60 quid but the whole idea that it is necessary to vet them in the first place.

the only losers here are the kids - they get so much out of these visits and now they are going to stop

i just dont see why they are making such a big fuss. i agree with the checks, i know there not foolproof but its a step forward, people would soon have an opinion if something went wrong. ie "why wasnt they checked??"

werent they

you mean.

there are cases where people are prosecuted and had been helping in schools but because they had no previous they passed the check.

There's already a thread about this.
Lexilex - because it won't protect children. It will only prevent the tiny, tiny minority who have committed these crimes and been caught from going into schools.

How on earth could anything 'go wrong'. Author in class with teachers and TA and CRB checked parent helpers. How on earth is anything going to go wrong?

sorry lexilex, think you're in a minority of one in thinking this is a good idea

I don't see what makes them so special either. Either everyone who sets foot in a school is CRB checked or they're not - how can you have half measures here just because they are celeb authors? Perhaps making them
pay out of their own pockets is harsh though - maybe the publishers could pay?

jambutty · 16/07/2009 20:40

No she isn't, spongebrain. See the other thread.

imagine if everyone who stepped foot in a school had to be CRB checked!

off to check out other thread - intrigued

exactly feenie. you cant have exceptions,

i also agree that the publishers could pay. how long are the checks valid for?

And where is the other thread? I can't find it.

I linked to it in my post at 20.08.

jambutty, I'm amazed but stand corrected

feenie, everyone who works in a school is CRB checked - so those of us who work daily with children, have access to them unsupervised and have a chance to build a relationship with them, not everyone who sets foot in a school

link worked for me - pleasantly surprised to find most people still thought it was a #bad# idea

It is utterly ridiculous! I saw Michael Morpurgo on the news and he will stop going if he has to be checked-others will follow and the children will lose out.
As he pointed out he is invited by the school, he never has less than about 20 children-sometimes he has over 100 ot as many as 500. All the adults are there-he is never alone with a DC. What risk can he possibly be in front of assorted DCs and adults?!!
What has happened to common sense?
