The only thing I would reunite him with is divorce papers.
He will have to live with this for the rest of his life. I do feel a bit sorry for him though.

Was the father being negligent? Did he leave the pram in a dangerous place unattended? Or was it an accident that could still have happened had it been his wife he was kissing?

Not sure the mistress slant is relevant particularly, other to ensure the father is placed in a bad light and therefore fully responsible for his little girl's deth, evn before rest of story is read.

Girl, 2, drowned in her buggy after father let go to kiss mistress
The father of a two-year-old girl who drowned when her pushchair slipped into the sea had let go of the handles to kiss his mistress, it has emerged.

By Lucy Cockcroft
Last Updated: 4:02PM GMT 18 Feb 2009

Rebecca Hopper who died after a pushchair she was in fell into the sea at Warren Apron, Kent.
Andrew Hopper had taken the woman out for a day trip to the seaside, along with his daughter, Rebecca, and son Lewis, eight months.

As he turned to embrace her, he let go of the buggy and a gust of wind blew it over the promenade at Warren Apron in Folkstone, Kent, with the children still strapped in.

Both Mr Hopper and his mistress leapt into the water when they realised what had happened and managed to unclip them.

But then they got into trouble themselves, and six passers-by had to rescue the children, who were both unconscious and face-down in the water.

Rebecca was airlifted to a specialist unit at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, but was declared dead two hours later. Lewis was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, where he is still recovering.

Their mother, Mr Hopper's wife Sarah, 35, had been completely unaware of her husband's affair until the tragedy happened.

Police sources said that he and his mistress, believed to be a work colleague and family friend, had been completely honest about how the events had unfolded.

Mr Hopper, 38, a software engineer at BAe Systems, was taken to hospital suffering from severe shock after the accident on Sunday afternoon. His mistress did not require treatment.

Mr Hopper's father Barry, from Margate, said: "He was obviously worried about her when they airlifted her up to London but it wasn't until later when the police told him that she had actually died that it hit him.

"Then he started having palpitations and had to be admitted to hospital.

"He's not been under sedation because it never actually hit him at the time that she was dead. He's very shocked but he's recovering.

"It was a tragic accident. The buggy just slipped away from them on a sloping bit of pathway and that was it."

Mr Hopper is understood have been reunited with his wife at Lewis' bedside. The child is in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

A source said: "Both Andrew and his mistress are totally devastated that this happened whilst their backs were briefly turned, it has been terrible for everyone involved.

"They were totally honest about the circumstances, which can't have been easy for his wife, but it was the right thing to do.

"They will have to live with what happened forever, it is going to be extremely difficult for all involved."

Mr and Mrs Hopper, who also have a ten-year-old son and live in Chatham, Kent, have issued a statement in praise of the rescuers and medical staff who fought to save Rebecca and Lewis.

They said Rebecca, who would have been three next Wednesday, was a "sweet, gorgeous little girl".

The statement read: "She was a special little girl with a special place in all our hearts.

"She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. We love her so much and she will be in our hearts forever."

Agree with Hulababy, I don't think the "mistress" angle is helpful. Just another stick to beat him with. Doesn't change the fact that it's a tragic death.

Hmmm - so now article has loaded - it does indeed seem, infact is reported as later on in article, as a tragic accident and no one actually to blame for it, and that the father was so overcome on hearing his baby had died was hospitalised himself.

Very sad for all involved.

It sounds like it could have happened if he'd let go of the buggy to sneeze, or indeed to kiss his mother. I think this is a nasty, petty-minded, vicious piece of reporting. What possible purpose could it serve apart from to make that poor man feel even worse about a horrible accident? I can't see it making his wife feel any better, either, to have it plastered all over the papers like that...

Wow, even though it was an accident and could have happened had it been his wife with him instead, could you ever forgive him??? Not sure i could.

It was a freak accident really, he could have let go of the buggy to tie his shoelaces and it would still have been swept away by the wind.
But yes, bastard for cheating in the first place.

"he let go of the buggy, beacause he was kissing "

The same tragic accident would have occured had he been kissing his wife, or his other child.

The mistress angle is just tabloid gutter press story angle. The story is tragic enough. It doesn't need the rest.

had she not been there, would he have let go of the buggy?

What a tragic way to have your affair exposed.

i am surprised the mistress business came out, tis a pity, takes away from the real tragedy of the story. didnt people used to cover up when men for example died on the job with other women? i think they did.

my dd got blown away in her buggy and nearly into the road, except for a truck driver who called out to me. i dread to think what would have happened, and i was chatting to my dh - her dad - and let go of the handle..

For god sake, being unfaithful is one thing, it's up to his wife to call him a bastard if she wants to...we know nothing about them or thei relationship. he didn't throw his children into the sea did he? it was a tragic accident!

Report

The story was tragic when it was just "father let go of buggy in dangerous place close to sea, buggy ran into sea" & he was negligent then - why TF didn't he put the brake on? Knowing why he let go of the buggy makes it 10 times worse IMO (the children's mother would have made sure the brake was on before he let go )

The little boy could have died too - miracle he didn't.

Report
UnquietDad · 18/02/2009 22:24

We can't say for sure that every mother would have put the brake on. It seems people want to make him suffer for being an adulterer. Surely he has suffered enough.

how awful for all of them.

Having an affair does not make you responsible for a tragedy.

"They were totally honest about the circumstances, which can't have been easy for his wife, but it was the right thing to do"

methinks it wasn't a case of him choosing to come clean, more a case of him not being able to do anything else!

Report
Hulababy · 18/02/2009 22:25

As a mum I know there were times I didn't put the brake on DD's pram.

The accident could well still have happened for any number of reasons.

yes, the affair is wrong, very wrong. But it is taking away from this really tragic story, by even being there. The key pont is that a little girl died, not who her dad was kissing.

And if it were my DH, then no I probably wouldn't forgive him no. But that would be the least of my upset ofver this story.

Ponders · 18/02/2009 22:26

It wasn't swept away by the wind - there was no wind (from a witness report I read today). He let go of it on a slope and it just rolled into the sea

Report
Bagebird · 18/02/2009 22:27

Very tragic, just awful for all involved. Agree that the mistress angle is totally uncalled for. Yet another example of media believing that, as long as they have accurate facts, they can report anything and everything. Shameful reporting.
