Paedophile to be deported to UK

A British paedophile who has spent 37 years in an Australian jail is to be deported to the UK, officials said. UK-born Robert Excell, 66, who moved to Australia when he was ten, will be flown home as soon as he has the necessary travel documents, said a spokesman for the Western Australia Justice Department. Excell, who emigrated to Australia as a child but never became a citizen, was serving an indeterminate sentence at the State Governor's pleasure after a string of sex attacks on boys.

What do you think?

Fair enough, if he's a British Citizen then he's our responsibility. So long as he is dealt with sufficiently by our justice system when he arrives, I have absolutely no problem with it. If the shoe were on the other foot, then I wouldn't want our gov paying to detain/punish a non-UK citizen.

NomDePlume Wed 23-Mar-05 11:50:58

Why have they left it 37 years to deport him though ? That's my only question.

Gobbledigook Wed 23-Mar-05 11:52:49

Hmm. Bizarre. As long as he's locked up and they throw away the key.

I know it's our money now paying for his detention but fair enough I guess if he's a British Citizen as NDP says.

here more details

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 11:53:26

I think he is going to be FREE but on the register

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 11:55:29

Yes he is DEFFO going to be FREE with no parole conditions

Each time he he been released before he has reoffended

Gomez Wed 23-Mar-05 11:55:53

Not quite sure if they can lock him up as he hasn't committed any offences in the UK? It is really just one of those tough shi*t things - Australia don't want him which is fair enough and as a UK citizen we can't stop him coming back.

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 11:59:29

On the news they have said

They are not prepared to let him be released into western Australia community

He is only being let out to be put on the plane to be sent here

He will be on sex offenders register but otherwise he will be free in the community

Gobbledigook Wed 23-Mar-05 12:00:26

- then no, I am absolutely not happy. Who would be???

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 12:11:12

I personnally think they should be castrated

But think it is completely mad to let him be free without any control over where he goes or lives or goes to work

I mean with his track record of reoffending how will the authorites explain to the family of the little boys he abuses that they had to look after his civil liberty

Gobbledigook Wed 23-Mar-05 12:14:48

This is why I think we have a right to know if they are living next door or working near our school. Who gives a shit about their civil liberties? Surely he surrendered those when he took away those of his victims? My priority is for the safety of my own children and I think I'm entitled to know if a persistent paedophile is living in the vicinity.

If he did anything to one of my children I couldn't be responsible for my actions!!!

suzywong Wed 23-Mar-05 12:16:20

well, living in WA with two boys I'm bloody glad

however I do think he should have been bludgeoned to death in the first place

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 12:17:51

yes SW I can see it from your point of view

But why is he been released at all?

Surely he should stay in jail in WA or UK

Gobbledigook Wed 23-Mar-05 12:17:51

SW! Not that I disagree!

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 12:20:40

Surely they are expecting him to REOFFEND

If they do not want to keep him in WA why let him free?

I do not think that he should be released in WA

More was the pioint that they think he is soooooooooo bad

suzywong Wed 23-Mar-05 12:23:34

oh quite, he should have the key thrown away that's for sure, and his bollocks cut off for good measure.

WA is having a big shake up of it's justice system all over the place at the moment and I suspect this has political motives

suzywong Wed 23-Mar-05 12:28:49

It's just come on the news that this paed raped lots of inmates in the high security jail he was incarcerated in and the authorities tried to cover up the offences.

This jail, Causarina, is on the news weekly at the moment, with bad management and corruption being revealed. So it seems to me that the Justice Department wants to make wash it's hands of this vile bastard as part of a process of trying to get some kind of good name back

Gobbledigook Wed 23-Mar-05 12:31:26

And this evil b'tard is coming over here to be set free???? Surely this can't be right?!

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 12:31:45

OMG

So he will deffo reoffend then won't he

He can't even say he has learnt his lesson

So children will suffer cos of political moves

And UK government will not be able to do something

Or they DON'T want to

Hulababy Wed 23-Mar-05 12:35:02

From the sounds of this (only read here) it ounds like civil liberties gone mad again. What about the liberties of the children (and adults?) he has abused?

Australia to deport UK paedophile

Excell will be put on the sex offenders' register in the UK
A British-born paedophile who has spent 37 years in jail in Australia for sex attacks is to be deported to the UK.
Robert Excell, who attacked four boys, would be sent to the UK "within days", officials in Western Australia said.

Excell, 66, who emigrated to Australia aged 10 but never became a citizen, is being freed because of his poor health, age and support from his wife.

Psychologists say he poses a "moderate" risk of reoffending. He will put on the UK sex offenders' register.

Excell had been expected back in the UK as early as Thursday, but his departure was delayed as Australian immigration officials said they would investigate his case.

'Reoffending risk'

Excell's convictions date back to 1965, when he was jailed for an attack on a seven-year-old boy.

He cannot be released into the West Australian community and will not pose a threat to the West Australian community

Western Australia attorney general Jim McGinty

Since then he has been paroled three times and reoffended on all three occasions.

Three years ago the state government in Western Australia intervened after a parole board decided to let Excell walk free.

It said he was such a danger he should stay in prison indefinitely.

But he will be now released from prison in Perth before being put on a flight to the UK.

'Visa cancelled'

Western Australia attorney general Jim McGinty told ABC radio he was not prepared to allow Excell to walk free there.

It's clear as night follows day as long as this individual's got blood running through his veins he poses a danger

Norman Brennan
Victims of Crime Trust

"He's had his visa cancelled. He is not an Australian citizen," said Mr McGinty.

"He came to Australia many, many years ago and then very seriously abused the privilege of residency here by committing the serious crimes that he did."

The British Home Office would not comment directly on the case of Excell but said protecting children was "of the highest priority" to the government.

A spokeswoman said sex offenders deported to the UK are interviewed by Special Branch who "pass any relevant information to the police in the area to which the offender is proposing to live".

However, Norman Brennan, director of the Victims of Crime Trust, called on the Australian authorities to reconsider their decision to release Excell.

"This individual poses a maximum danger to children and has committed crime after crime after crime of the worst degrading types of paedophilia," he said.

The Uk gov would do exactly the same as WA I am not saying its the right thing to do but he is british after all . This is such a dreadful crime to commit what should be done ? This has a smack of NIMBY about it. Still gives me the willies that this man will be walking free.

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 12:42:02

Perhaps they should find a desserted island hundreds of miles from anywhere and put them all there

Yes I agree If you google you find out that the UK gov have been sending them to and fro for years including to OZ

As do all gov so it seems

RTKangaMummy Wed 23-Mar-05 12:44:58

Actually I guess that is what they did with the convicts 100+ years ago sent them all to OZ

but why release him when he gets here?
