It's on BBC Parliament.

Joe Biden is coming across as a right twerp.

Also, a wedding reception somewhere is missing its band.

The Clintons really should get back into their collective box now.

Hello! I have nothing of note to say at all. Just coming to keep you company. Agree re Billary but what in particular has irked you?

(Is it bad to say Billary, btw? Unsisterly?)

It's just weird, on the coverage - they cut to Billary (works for me) every 30 seconds or so, and they're like but completely rictus. This desperate insistence on proving that they all love each other just emphasises how much they all really hate each other. I reckon.

Wonder if Andy H is there? Must pump him for confidential info. We should get him out for more beer.

I think he's exec-ing a reeally funny programme which I will tell you about when I see you but which is, in tone and intent, the equivalent of "Celine Dion... Solves the Housing Crisis"

I love the idea that isn't rictus enough to capture the facial expresssion of US politicians.

Mumsnet is so weirdly quiet at this time of night. I can hear my footsteps echo as I traipse from thread to thread. But I have watched a dismal film, made bread, and rocked gently to and fro for a while, so MN is all that is left.

Well Obama was outstanding - I like his talk. It was rather inspiring but heck I can't even vote - not yet a citizen. Bilary - bleurgh. Here in Colorado we can put on a show, even if they close the major highway, schools get an extra week's vacation and my tax money goes for something I don't even have a say in . In reality if I could vote - Barack would get my vote. There said my piece.

How long does the citizenship process take -- i.e. until you can vote?

Threadwworm - Are you keeping NYC time in order not to miss-out on the bulk of the coverage?

Yes. I keep a lonely vigil in a plastic Uncle Sam hat.

We're watching it and will be watching the RNC next week too on account of DH's job.

We watched quite a lot of CNN on holiday and they had lots of coverage of embarassing clothes and dancing too.

LOL at thready in her plastic hat.

I've been trying to find Obama's speech in full somewhere but haven't been able to - but from the clips I've seen it was a teensy bit underwhelming. The tough-guy anti-McCain stuff was a bit cringey (apart from 'tough talk, bad strategy' which was a good line, I thought. Here's hoping the Democrats hammer that one home in a million attack ads.)

It's odd, because his cadences are rather like MLK's, but actually as a politician Obama has very little in common with MLK. Obama is really a very lukewarm nu-Labour type, as far as I can make out.

I do want him to win mind.

This Sarah Palin business is quite odd ain't it? Do we think that even the crossest Hillary supporters will vote for an anti-abortion social conservative just cos she's got the right chromosomes?

I think I did see the full text on the BBC site somewhere. They said it was rich inpolicy commitments, but I didn't notice many. Tax cuts. Jobs for Americans, not for slanty-eyed cheap labour (hope that doesn't include cheap foreign labour that copy-edits american professors). Self-sufficient in fuel in ten years. 'Responsible' withdrawal from Iraq (with no deadline set).

Yes the Palin thing is utterly freakish. She is a creatiopnist, ffs.

policywonk · 30/08/2008 22:47

I didn't even think of the BBC site. Doh. I just look at the Guardian online and then think I've scoured the farthest reaches of the web.

How depressing if those are his headline policies.

I didn't know Palin (a name that usually makes me feel nice and warm and slightly lustful) was a creationist. Christ, what will happen if Obama doesn't win?

My source for the Palin-a-creationist fact is Mumsnet, so might not be true, I suppose.

It would be far better if Michael Palin was made president of US of course. Or indeed of the world.

Sarah Palin is a born-again Evangelist. Apparently, Evangelists don't think there is a problem with global warming as they believe all things created by God remain within his control. SP has a tormented evangelical look that I find really alarming.

Report
Threadwworm · 31/08/2008 11:00

That is really terrifying. So her insane beliefs could really impact on an important policy matter.

I can't say what I really think about that because the optimum time for 42 days imprisonment under the prevention of terrorism legislation is the beginning of the summer holidays, not the end of them.

Report
Peachy · 31/08/2008 11:04

Ah, some evangelists dont believe that (good friend evangelist minister)

no they believe global warming is God's punishment for human sin, so sinners will die

which is even more scary, no?

Palin's criminal stupidity only slightly less incredible that Thready's use of 'impact' as a verb.

Who would you go for, Swedes? (Obama/McCain, not Thready/Sarah Palin. Always assuming we'd all choose Michael Palin given a free hand.)

Would you like to step outside and say that 'impact' can't be used as a verb?

OED at dawn, in the MN orchard.
Report
Threadwworm · 31/08/2008 23:06

Or perhaps the point is that 'to impact' is just naff rather than ungrammatical

There might be a case for voting McCain on the grounds that an elderly hasbeen would find it easier to bite the bullet and pullout of Iraq than would a younger man with a reputation to make.

'Would you like to step outside and say that 'impact' can't be used as a verb?'

No, thready. No, I wouldn't.

I've just been on another thread trying to invent reasons not to shoot myself/someone else if McCain wins. I'm not sure I've convinced anyone, least of all myself.
