Is anyone else staying up to see the results of this?

Looks like labour have lost one of their safest seats to the SNP

Surprise result in Glasgow Easy

Stayed up to watch it, but gave in at 1.45 when there was a recount.

I don't think Curran is getting much of the blame... how long can Crash Gordon last?

yes, you prob right, but on R4 this am nulabour say its not reflection on gobden broon, its just global economics ...and she is wasprominent on scottish scene..

and it used to be that the SNP won with Margo, Winnie, Jim Sillars...this guy is weedy lawyer or summat
and it sure looks like a glasgow kiss slap in the chops to both of them really ...maybe a dont count on us vote?

am enjoying the broonites cartoon in private eye atm..

This really surprised me. I thought the majority would be cut to ribbons but I still thought Labour would win.

Poor Gordo. I think its fair to say he's had it. If he manages to cling to his job it will onmly be because no other Labour MP is mad enough to want to lead the party into electoral oblivion.

Report
EffiePerine · 25/07/2008 11:53

I don't think there's a queue of people after his job at the minute...

Glasgow Easy, that would be another name for Blythwood Square then?

I used to say to vote anyone but Tory but now it is vote anyone but Labour.

Margaret Curran is a terrible spokesperson, on Newsnight she comes across as very bitter and shrewish. She was asked recently why she had never been to that constituency despite it being next to her own MSP one and dodged the question extremely badly, which would have annoyed anyone from Glasgow East listening.

And if Wendy Alexander wasn't enough to nail the Labour coffin shut then I don't know what is.

Also, the leaving MP was not leaving due to ill health but something to do with a £500,000 problem with his expenses which isn't being reported about properly.

Report
Upwind · 25/07/2008 14:28

The reporting about the leaving MP has been oddly vague. Mrs Curran was actually Labour's fourth choice for the contest which also seems strange. I wonder if there is more scandal to emerge?

I am amazed the SNP can do so well with the strong Labour bias in the media up here. They can't put a gloss on this though.

If Alex Salmond parted the Red Sea he'd be accused of causing a drought.

I found the story, well hidden but here are the reasons those scurrilous (sp? I know I know!) scumbags Labour had to say he was "ill." I'd be depressed too if I had swindled the public like that. And this is the party who wants to stop benefit fraud - tell me one case of benefit fraud that amounts to £500,000?

Naughty naughty smacky botty, but then MPs like that don't they - or is that just the Tories?

TheCrackFox · 25/07/2008 16:55

Bloody hell - TIBS - I had no idea about that Glasgow MP. That was kept very quiet! I don't blame Glasgow Easy for not voting for Labour - they have taken the piss out of alot of their safe seats.

TwoIfByTheSea, I think the Labour reign here is over now, and I agree that Wendy leaving was the final nail in the coffin.

However, her brother, Douglas, was on the Newsnight election panel last night, and they are like chalk and cheese! He was reasoned, articulate, balanced, eloquent...

They could do worse than send him up as a leadership candidate.

TIBS..really good point...only this morning dh had been going on about that MP and reporting of his 'illness'.....
shocking but not surprising sadly

just as well we have fair balanced media reporting all these fine details for us ..

TwoIfBySea · 25/07/2008 22:00

There is also the small, also unreported, point of 11 Labour councillors who are being investigated.

It is just as well that Labour can manipulate the media so well as when it comes to sleaze they make the Tories look like amateurs.

And Douglas Alexander is just as bad as his sister despite being more articulate.

Scottish Labour are now looking at new ways to entice voters.

Don't think this will work though.

Report
MintChocAddict · 25/07/2008 22:56

I also stayed up to watch the results and gave up aroung 1.30ish when the recount was announced.
I particularly enjoyed Douglas Alexander and Nicola Sturgeon having a barny about Wendy on Newsnight Scotland. "You made a comment about my sister," "No I didn't," "Yes you did", "No I didn't", "Oh yes you did", "Take that back" "No I won't" etc etc etc.........

TwoIfBySea..lol, & scary at same time though.. well it gave me the horrors!

agree about the alexander brother/sister..yeauk

watching david miliband on newsnight tonight and again it feels liek the 6th form are in charge
if this is the best team he can come up with, after 10 years of waiting and plotting ..
its a damn poor show, and oh yeah dont forget his governmnet of all the talents, digby jones et al..who is kidding who here?

the knesset thing too, fuck sakes why are we threatening iran when israel has huge cache of nuclear weapons that are a political elephant in the room...

he should have more careful what he wished for
and as for media, its double edged sword and they know all that..helped to take them to power and will help dislodge them from it too...that they should never doubt..

oh and those fecking hand signals that all nulabour do, i cant bear them any more
i could bear the sound of thatcher and i cant bear to watch these guys talk with their fecking hand reassuring stuff..real teeth on edge STOP IT you silly fecks
it means nothing
no one trusts you ....

I know someone who met the Alexanders years ago at a function and they were very much of the ilk that doesn't speak to people unless they are of use/influential.

I'm reprising this thread to tell you about a v funny youtube clip. Type in "gordon brown's downfall, glasgow election".

Bad language (and bad use of apostrophes on the subtitles!) but very, very funny.
