...604 Mohammeds registered in this country.

(From the Times today : )

My mother was welfare assistant at a West Drayton primary school in 1957 and there was one Sikh child there then - no Muslim children at all. Where on earth did 604 Mohammeds live???

Ah yes, but not in the fifties.

I presume Southall was becoming an Asian centre then though? A friend of mine used to have daytrips to Southall about four times a year from Lewisham, in order to get Indian spices, because that was the only place you could get them. You had to get on about four busses, and it took about two hours! This was in the seventies.
