I think that points to the HUGE DIFFERENCE between

trial by jury

and

trial by media

well the woman has a life sentence anyway doesn't she so what is the point of jailing her?

what have the girl's parents said about it?

I think the parents actually brought the case against the grandmother at first, that explains why the judge questioned that the CPS should prosecute Kiel Simpson (the uncle).

Report
tigerschick · 11/09/2007 15:12

The mother of the little girl said that she had always been scared of the dog.
Agree that the grandmother has got a life sentence anyway, and she is not a danger to society.
Very sad story from start to finish.

I just saw this . Am taken about that such a breach of duty of care cannot amount to any criminal conviction. Hope they can live with themselves Poor Ellie. RIP

Court comes to decison over guilt of defendent. Who'd have thunk it?

I read the court notes of the Mum of the little girl she had said that she did not blame her mother and didnt want her mother punished they must take that into account. This was a tragic accident (that could have been prevented) but still an accident. Is it fair to punish the little girls mother twice by taking away her beloved daughter and then her mother also. It is a very sad event

another thread here.

are you seriously saying it was an accident?!

Radio news said that the father stormed out of court when the verdict was announced - I guess that's what he's got to say about it.

once again

TRIAL BY MEDIA does not equate to JUSTICE

do you not perhaps somewhere think that maybe a judge and jury when presented with the evidence know a little bit more than somebody who has read a sensationalised account of a tragic story written by a journalist

journalists do not fight for truth and justice, they fight for readers .. the more pathos and sensationalism the better

unless you are willing to go through the transcripts you have to believe that justice was carried out .. that's why we have a justice system .. and if it wasn't then that's why we have an appeals system

What a tragic story. I think the Granny will have to live with the guilt forever so there is no point in sending her to Prison.

Can't believe The granny drunk 2 bottles of wine and smoked 10 joints whilst looking after the little girl OMG. She looks older than 45 too - irrelevent I know. She looks more like 65+ - must be all the booze and the joints.

I'm really surprised by the verdict. I can't believe that she was not criminally negligent if she had drank that much wine and smoked that much cannabis. I think that she was neglectful in her care of the little girl.

I'm uncertain if I think that she should have gone to jail etc....

In some ways for me this case draws paraalels with cases where dangerous driving or even drunk driving has caused a child's death. Then we accept that the driver will carry a terrible burden for the rest of their lives and often they are not a danger to the wider society but they still often go to prison and most people feel that is appropriate.

No point sending her to prison and zero to be gained. A tragedy which has to serve as a lesson to others with these types of dogs.
