oh no, what does this mean?

Just saw this too, but there must be a benign explanation-- transfer from clothes, toys they held with them, etc? I know nothing of the science involved in this, but if one match could be explaned away, why not two or three?

If so, there could be several explanations for that:

  • she was in the car with someone at some point. It is a hire car after all. ANyone could have hired it.
  • the DNA was on her stuff, or her siblings clothes, their normal family belongings, which her parents put in the car when they hired it.
Will shut up now. At least that is some news.

If you are members of the forensics team that is assisting in the enquiry then I'm sorry for interupting your discussion.

If not, can I borrow HumphreyCushion's stamp:

On BBC news today it was giving an example of DNA.

So, if I held a cup my FULL DNA would be on the cup.

If I shook hands with you and then touched the cup, your PARTIAL DNA and my FULL DNA would be on the cup.

So, although the partial DNA of Maddie would have been around ie on clothes or Cuddle Cat or the twins, the fact her FULL DNA has been found in the car suggests she was actually in the car.

I agree, it is breaking news and not unusual to want to discuss it. Thanks for the DNA clarification, btw (full vs. partial)

Also, I know it is a crazy-out-of-the-movies longshot, but I hope they checked who had that car before the family rented it.

Seems odd to me, very unlikely.
So much that has been reported has later turned out to be untrue, has been announced as fact and then refuted later on.

It was not a FULL match -

here is what it says-

Portuguese police say they have found firm DNA evidence that the body of Madeleine McCann was in the family's hire car five weeks after she went missing, sources have told Sky News.

A policeman delivers flowers to the McCannsSky crime correspondent Martin Brunt said police felt the find was "damning".

He said the sample of blood sent to the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham carried three matches of Madeleine's DNA.

"The samples that came back last week produced three matches to Madeleine's DNA," Brunt said.

"In the apartment police found one full match on a windowsill. That perhaps is not so important as Madeleine had been staying in the apartment for two weeks.

"In the hire car, five weeks after Madeleine's disappearance, police found a partial match.

I have not posted on any of these threads before because I am so upset by the whole thing and cannot believe that anyone could do anything to such a lovely child.

However, as this is on the news and is breaking news, why shouldnt we be brought up to date with things just like the Michael Barrymore news that he will not face charges.

The whole thing is distasteful I agree but it is newsworthy and discussable.

They found blood in the car for God's sake. It belonged to the child.

No one can explain this away - as much as they would like to.

alternatively you could beleive the Guardian instead

"Others, elaborating on the theme, have suggested the police suspect Kate of having some connection with the death of her daughter and of then possible transporting her body. 'All completely false,' a senior source close to the investigation told The Observer yesterday, saying that no blood at all had been found in the car and that a DNA sample taken from its interior, though still a likely match for Madeleine, could have come from just about any item with which the McCanns' daughter had come into contact in the days before she vanished."

More speculation from competing "police sources" doesn't really add anything does it?

ok-- thanks for posting that. There will no doubt be rumours, misrepresentations, etc over this latest report.

it just said that full match has been found in the boot (99.9%)

I note your comment on DNA LL and thank you for your points.

I was simply repeating what I had heard on BBC and realise that it is a little more complicated than I described.

But thank you anyway.
