They are having a bad time. OTOH, they have been paying dividends to their shareholders for years and years so they could perhaps call on those very people who have been profiting from them for so long....

No need for Government involvement. Market forces, yada yada yada

Sancro, they're the ones I feel really sorry for. But I still don't think the airlines should be bailed out. No need to save the industry, they have shareholders who can do it.

I remember one of my relatives being pretty well bankrupted because Lloyds was going under and he was a 'Name'. He had to give them all his money and had to get a mortgage. Poor soul, his house was a 10-bedroomed mansion in its own estate. He sold some fields and saved the day.

Remember BOJO or bawjaws as I think of him, said Flybe was a private company that didn’t get govt help, let’s see how this goes.

You seem to be ignoring the fact that every country needs airlines in order to trade. We need our airlines to survive.

A lot of companies will have to adopt “limp-mode” to keep the bare bones infrastructure active so as the virus recedes they can reactivate and help to rebuild economies.

Now is not the time for settling petty scores.

Petty scores? Branson has a personal wealth of £4billion, he can bail out his own bloody company.

I'd have a bit of empathy for their workers as well as posting about how delighted you are that an industry is going bankrupt.

Otherwise you come across as being a GF and I'm sure that's not your intention.Hmm

@lizzie
Have you the same sympathy for the 1000s in the tourist and hospitality industry in the U.K. who will suffer? many sole traders without billionaire owners?
Airlines should not be going bust, they make a lot of ££, their business planning must be crap if a few slow weeks ends their business.

I feel sorry for everyone in this mess. There may very well be need to regulate capitalism and air travel. Also to tax billionaires properly and hold them to account. This might be a catalyst.

I don’t feel this emergency is a thing to celebrate, even though I still don’t feel airlines or other businesses should necessarily be bailed out.

Lots of normal people made redundant or with less hours. Knock on affects for suppliers and small business here and abroad. The shareholders for big companies are often pension funds so also affect individuals who are not powerful.

What an utterly bizarre question.

And who exactly do you think these shareholders are? Do you think they’re all individual people / multimillionaires?

With bigger companies, a lot of these shareholders will be pension funds ffs.
