I was watching the news last night re Kate McCanns requestioning by the Portuguese Police. I have updated on the events this morning and it appears she will be declared as a SUSPECT today. Im shocked about this, what do you all think? Surely she didnt have anything to do with it?

BarbieGirl Fri 07-Sep-07 08:31:47

OMG. I will turn the news on soon as the kids are at school.

quadrophenia Fri 07-Sep-07 08:32:05

until anyone is proven guilty in the case I really wouldn't like to speculate

Howdydoody Fri 07-Sep-07 08:32:35

Unless she is an Oscar winning actress I will never believe she had anything to do with it

noddyholder Fri 07-Sep-07 08:34:02

Why?She was one of the least traumatised looking people I have ever seen lose a child

Pixiefish Fri 07-Sep-07 08:34:12

No chance

binkleandflip Fri 07-Sep-07 08:35:10

Dont forget Robert Murat is still in the same position as Kate McCann now is - and no evidence seems to have been found against him - so nothing to formally say it has against McCann.

I cant, dont want to believe it.

HorribleHorace Fri 07-Sep-07 08:39:33

i strongly feel they are barking up the wrong tree here. This is going to be a major miscarriage of justice imo sad

noddyholder Fri 07-Sep-07 08:39:38

why no chance? These are people who left their children eevry night of a holiday where they were in the creche until 6 every day.And even after a neighbour said the kids had cried for hours they refused mark warner babysitting and still went out.!?!? There are huge holes in their account of that evening and there is forensic eveidence now and people still won't believe it Weird as in most cases like this it is someone close

fairyjay Fri 07-Sep-07 08:41:51

Apparently the McCann spokeswoman has confirmed that she will be named a suspect today.

It is supposedly purely a Portugese legal device??? shock

The reason for the interview being 11 hours is that the interview is conducted through an interpreter, and then handwritten. Incredible in this day and age.

In my heart I really don't believe they had anything to do with Madeleine's disappearance.

persephonesnape Fri 07-Sep-07 08:45:34

they can only ask 'difficult' questions if the supect is given the legal status of a suspect - in a way it's protecting her - and madeline, presuming that she is dead by doing things correctly according to portugese law.

And whilst i'm not into finger pointing, the authorities haven't even started on gerry mccann yet - if they were after him they would get his wife in for eleven hours questioning first.

noddyholder Fri 07-Sep-07 08:50:15

Also when you are just a witness being questioned i think you have to answer questions whereas as an official suspect you can remain silent which would be no good to the investigation.I think this also means they will have to stay in portugal whereas they could have left up until yesterday.

fairyjay Fri 07-Sep-07 08:57:15

How sad for them - assuming they are innocent - that having been happy to stay in Portugal, when they are on the point of leaving, and trying to get on with their lives, they are told they can't.

wannaBe Fri 07-Sep-07 09:00:23

I think that people that say "there's no way" are naive. More often than not it's someone close to the victim.

I think it's terribly sad but am not in the least bit surprised that it's come to this.

I just hope the "fighting fund" won't be allowed to be used for any defence if it gets that far.

wannaBe Fri 07-Sep-07 09:04:32

and what if they're not innocent?

The police have declared very publically in the past that the family are not suspects. This case has attracted huge attention, both in Portugal and abroad, and a day after the phorensic tests come back one of the parents is declared a suspect and the other hasn't even been interviewed yet.

The portuguese police have been hugely criticised over their handling of this case. There's no way they would declare the parents suspects unless they had very good reason for doing so.

of course not charged or owt

hippipotami Fri 07-Sep-07 09:06:06

Haven't we gone through all this with Robert Murat? In order for the police to formally interview someone they have to be formally declared Suspect. It is a legality, it does not mean they suspect her of anything.

binkleandflip Fri 07-Sep-07 09:07:19

hippi, already mentioned that someway down the thread.

ghosty Fri 07-Sep-07 09:07:39

I am not surprised ... I agree with wannabe and cod.

squeakybrushes Fri 07-Sep-07 09:10:55

i agree, we need to continue to keep open minds. we're so used to the police working a certain way in this country and if this case has taught us anything it's that the portugeuse do things very differently.

expatinscotland Fri 07-Sep-07 09:12:04

After working in the criminal court system in two states, all I can say is that truth really is stranger than fiction.

I worked for a lovely judge - RIP Ignatius/'Nacho' - who summed it all up beautifully: 'There are three sides to every story: his side, her side and the truth.'

Hulababy Fri 07-Sep-07 09:18:26

I just hope it is not her. I hope the legally naming of her as a suspect is just to do with protecting her legal status and all that.

It's a very sad affair all round. Even sadder if the mum really had anything to do with it.

wannaBe Fri 07-Sep-07 09:19:51

they just had Gerry Mccann's brother on 5 live and he certainly wasn't implying that this status is being given to Kate for her own legal protection/benefit.

The police have interviewed lots of people in this case, the family, the friends, guests at the hotel, the staff, robert murat and several of his friends. And yet only two suspects have been declared, are you telling me that only two people have been formally interviewed? bollocks.

it's the children I feel sorry for/have always felt sorry for.

squeakybrushes Fri 07-Sep-07 09:21:03

i just find it impossible to conceive that someone would go to the amount of trouble the mccanns have been to, trawling through europe appealing for information, conducting such a high profile campaign if the truth was that they were involved themselves.

and as for the claim that 'she doesn't seem very upset for someone who's lost a child' - how awful that someone in her position has the added strain of having to appear a certain way to avoid suspicion. perhaps she's just not a publicly emotional person. people react differently to traumatic events. she can't let herself grieve until she knows for certain what's happened to her daughter, so i'm not surprised she has a stiff upper lip.
