Bereavement Payments when Unmarried

Saw this on the BBC Unmarried partners still missing bereavement payments www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51676780
And wondered what people think. On the one hand families and children missing out at a time of enormous stress seems terrible, but on the other if you choose not to marry but have children why should you get the protections of being married?
