I suppose the school is embrassed that it happened on their grounds. It also shows that their kids are a bunch of prats.

However I think it is pretty harmless compared to some videos on YouTube. Its not as if anyone was hurt making the video or cohersed into the filming.

Anyway these kids have got more publicity than they ever would have done if the BBC had not shown the story on the web.

I love the way that the school has organised for the video to be taken off YouTube....and so the BBC provides it on its own website

I saw the video.

I'm sorry, I know it's wrong, but I thought it was funny.

And now it's all over the place.

I sent it to everyone I know.

OK, thought the title said 'School condoms'
Was expecting a slightly different thread.....

Not on. Substitute race for class and would it be palatable?

Report
whiskeyandbeer · 14/08/2007 11:40

well is it a suitable substitution to equate race for class?
personally i find people are far too sensiive over issues such as race and class. the prime example being any black comedian or rapper and their constant use of nigger in their songs and even cracker/honkey against white people is pretty much accepted in mainstream soceity but god help any white person who repeats the phrase.
also surely we should be mature enough to poke fun at such pointless issues as race and class and have done for years before everyone became afraid of being labeled a racist or a snob.

How many times have upper class or 'posh' people been made the butt of unpleasant jokes? I can't help feeling that if this were the other way round there would have been no outcry.

Heard this on the news last night where the children were described as "immature, arrogant and insensitive" and wondered why it was news that teenagers were any of these things.

I thought it was hilarious! Like said, youtube shows a lot worse! Oh and playstation/video games are pretty graphic these days but we don't mind our kids playing with them!

Attila- I too thought it said school condoms

So, is YouTube also going to take off all those videos of people being beaten by gangs of youths as 'happy slapping'?

No, I don't think so.

Hypocrites.

Report
Gee72 · 14/08/2007 11:52

It's unpalatable to me because it's priviliged kids explicitly showing that 'chavs' are worthless and expendable in their eyes because they are from a lower class. It's far far too easy to trot out the old 'PC gone maaaaaaad' line and bang on about a Nanny State.

You know what, I'm yer commoon issue bleeding heart liberal: I think it would be a good thing if people had a bit more respect for others and thought about how their actions are perceived. Maybe our country wouldn't be goining to hell in a handcart then.

They should.

Report
NineUnlikelyTales · 14/08/2007 11:56

At least the posh kids weren't doing it for real, unlike plenty of the chav versions

Report
Reallytired · 14/08/2007 11:57

I think its silly comparing that video to happy slapping. NO ONE was hurt. It was planned acted and the kids made some attempt to even chorograph it.

Videos of people having the sh$t beaten out of them are totally different. These kids did not break the law in anyway. All that has happened is that they have embrassed their old school.

I thought it was hilarious

'posh' people get the piss taken out of them all the time

Report
oliveoil · 14/08/2007 12:01

and if I was the headmaster at their £23K () a year school, I would be stiffling a smirk whilst telling them off

it is in no way saying that chavs are inferior, it is a play on fox hunting imo

It's now doing the rounds all over the US and people are laughing their arses off.

Report
Gee72 · 14/08/2007 12:07

Of course it's saying chavs are inferior! It's implying they're vermin!

It's hardly the most important thing in the world to be worrying about, and I can't see why it's news to be honest. It makes the school and it's pupils look elitist so I can see why it's been taken down. So no, they're not over reacting. Happy slapping is a different issue.

"It makes the school and it's pupils look elitist so I can see why it's been taken down."

They probably are elitist. How many mumsnetters could afford 23K of school fees.

Anyway it smacks of censorship to ban it.

Report
Gee72 · 14/08/2007 12:16

Who's banned it? The school, on whose grounds it was shot, have requested it to be removed.

Report
expatinscotland · 14/08/2007 12:17

Well, then, I'm glad I've got a copy of it, because I find it funny.

SueBaroo · 14/08/2007 12:20

It was flippin' hilarious and just the kind of silliness you'd see on Little Britain or Monty Python. I imagine they're kicking themselves for not thinking of it first.
It's not like it's an instruction video, ffs.

Gee, the video is satire. So it's making fun of people who might hold the attitude that chavs are inferior / vermin. It's making fun of people who have class prejudices. Such type of humour is in my opinion very valuable in our society.

good to see i'm not the only one who found it hilarious so.
and i don't think it's a case of banging out the "pc gone mad/nanny state line" it is a genuine problem in the mainstream media these days.
i mean if you look at something like harry enfield years ago it was ok to take the piss out of everyone, you had wayne and waynetta aka "the slobs", you also had the piss being taken out of old money with "tim nice but dim" and new money with the "i'm considerably richer than you" guy.
but now if you are white you can't make any sort of social comments on race issues without being labelled a racist. if you are well off you can't make any comment about problems in underpriveledged areas without being a snob.
basically you have to be part of a minority to comment on it.
just look at that big brother row earlier on in the year.a black girl and a white girl both used the word nigger in a conversation.big brother acknowledged that neither used the word in a way that intended racism but that the word itself was unacceptable.what did they do? they only kicked the white girls out.
as someone said before, posh people are often made the butt of the joke and no one is jumping to their defence. in my mind this is because the people who are jumping to condemn these posh kids feel that the underpriveledged need to be wrapped in cotton wool and deserve sympathy where as posh people are priveledged so don't need anyone to defend them.which of course is a snobbery in itself.
