This is not looking positive at all, so sad for the poor parents. When will their anguish end and they find out the truth about their little girl...it seems to be going on forever

I saw them on the news yesterday, and they are both adamant she is still alive. According to Kate the Portuguese Police have said they are still looking for a live girl.

I admire their positivity, but am wondering how healthy it is to stay so determined she is alive. How long do you go on for?

Until she is found I guess Hipippi! Am trying to imagine - as I type - how I would feel, near on 100 days in, and still no child. My answer would be, that I would more than likely have fallen apart, be on tranquilisers and having therapy.

I would be leaning on my faith more than ever too, but like them, I would not give up hope of my child being returned to me.

lets not forget also, they are privvy to far more information than us. For my part, I take their lead in their optimism that she is still alive (naive or neigh - there we are). Whilst the world looks on, spouting out wild speculation of the poor girls whereabouts and possible downfall, I prefer to stay positive. I do harbour negative thoughts too - thats true to say, but for the parents sake.... I will support their beliefs until hard evidence prooves otherwise.

I too admire them for there long standing suffering of this traumatic event. My prayers remain with them and for little Madeleine.

Well its a good job that the woman didn't just snatch the child like I read that she wished she had done.

If I were the McCann?s I would leave Portugal and come home to the UK. Especially as it seems the Portuguese media have now turned on them and labelled them as suspects in the case.

This family have become the victims of their own publicity campaign imo, and now the media that they used to publicise their cause has turned on them, and have made the victims the accused.

While I can totally see why they would want to stay in Portugal for Madeleine?s sake, they also have two other children to think of, two children who are here, now, and bringing those children up in the shadow of the belief that their sister may have been murdered at the hands of her parents/friends of the family is not the best for those children surely. At least in the UK the media are still fairly low key on their reporting of suspicion aimed at the friends/family.

But the DNA on the bottle was that of a man's!! here.
So there are really no more reasons to believe it's not her than there were before the test...

Of course, all over the portuguese media are the news that police are sure Madeleine is dead and that contradictions in parents and friends statements, particularly at the times and way they were checking on the children that night are the key to solving the disappearance. Also, it's reported the police have phone calls and emails that confirm this... They've now been searching the sea for two days.
I'm usually quite sceptical about this 'news' but it really is everywhere and coming from independent sources....

Reports state that the DNA taken from the bottle and the straw was that of a male:

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6936214.stm

This leaves open the possibility that the child was Madeleine, and that the man who was with her also drunk from the bottle using the straw. Personally, I find it curious that the people who were seen at the cafe have not come forward to eliminate themselves from the enquiry.

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 12:38

Why should they, lyra?

There are thousands of children who fit Madeline's description.

For all you know, these people could have been tourists from another country who left the area and haven't heard hide nor hair about it.

Would you voluntarily involve yourself in some 'investigation' just because you looked like a suspect/missing person, etc.?

exactly why would anyone get involved in this trial by media fiasco.
it's very interesting that after manipulating the media so much in the initial aftershock of the incident the mccanns are now calling on the media to leave them alone.after the spotlight has been turned back on the mccanns and their friends.

I'm not necessarily surprised that the family in the cafe have not come forward. We have just driven across Europe with our blonde three year old daughter - we've crossed through five countries and stopped at service stations and cafes along the way. Someone could have decided she looked and Madeleine and reported us but we wouldn't know as we've not read the papers or watched the TV and many other thousands are doing the same on their holidays. I don't really understand how the woman could say 100% sure - how can you be?

Report
wannaBe · 08/08/2007 14:19

there's just no way I would want to get involved in this case. I can imagine the media would soon track down the family if they came forward, there's always someone who's prepared to leak the info after all, and I don't imagine there are many who would want to be a part of that.

as for the media,

this is what the Portuguese press are apparently saying

The one thing that concerns me about this is, if it's true, and Madeleine died at the hands of one of the parents or one of the other members of the party, the implications for future reporting of such cases could be huge. There has been massive media and public support for this family. The headlines have been all about the abduction, with no criticism of the family allowed, with campaigns/yellow ribbons/proposed maddy days etc, and it has gained unprecedented media attention/public support. But if it transpires that MAdeleine died in the apartment and someone close to her was involved and the parents knew about it, I think people will be less sympathetic towards future victims of child abduction, and the media will be very careful about how they report in future for fear of being made fools of.

And before I get jumped on, I'm not saying I believe it's true, but obviously no-one can know for certain either way, and it is not beyond the relms of possibility, although most would like to think that it could never be true...

Report
LaCerbiatta · 08/08/2007 14:45

Well, I haven't been jumped on, strangely , but I'll say anyway that I don't believe the parents are involved or know anything.

It was just on Spanish news, pretty much as was said further down, that the Portugese police have supicions regarding the statements of the parents and/or group, they are investigating 'inconsistencies' in their statements.

Report
expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 15:25

I hadn't realised they were there with a group of other families.

Did they all leave their children to go to dinner every night?

Report
JeremyVile · 08/08/2007 15:26

I think they were with a grop of their friends and family, about 10 others?

Report
Peachy · 08/08/2007 15:30

\there are also other 'leads' apaprently-

last week a known child abductor who ives in Spain hung himself after being investigated for the abductin of a child similat to amdeleine; Police are investogating if tehre could be a link there

also, one of the reports I read said that one of the friends had been under surveillance, rather than mr and Mrs McCann- if statements vary after all, its not going to necessarily folow that it was the parents after all.

There was also a quote in The Times from an expert expressing an opinion that blood found in an apartment could be A0 from anyone; and B0 if the blood was traceable by Dog, then a corpse must have been there for several hours- which apparently doesn't fit

if i were the people in the Belgium case I would come forwards if I knw, its not exactly hard to prove who the child is if it is legitimate

Report
expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 15:31

Oh, I didn't know they were with a bunch of folks.

Report
binklehasflipped · 08/08/2007 15:34

I think that's the implication expat...

I've always thought it strange that people continually referred to Madeleine as being abducted (particularly with the Shrek thing) without a shred of evidence that this actually occurred.

I dont think the parents have anything to do with it but as for the rest of the party who know? It looks as though the net is closing though. UCM posted on another thread that could be mosquito blood on the wall which had never occurred to me

Report
Peachy · 08/08/2007 15:38

There was also a sighting was there not of a man seen near the beach carrying a still child, they're getting an oceanographer to see whree the body would end up- the man wasn't identified as the main suspect 9whose name escapes me), I imagine if it was Mr McCann they would have an ID also

Report
oliveoil · 08/08/2007 15:41

the man that the police are 'watching' re inconsistencies in statements is NOT one of the McCanns friends but someone who was on holiday there at the same

in The Times yesterday iirc

and I will eat my foot if the parents are involved, no way imo

Report
binklehasflipped · 08/08/2007 15:44

I feel that a conclusion isnt too far off now. Even if the blood isnt Madeleines (and I hope not I really do) it looks as though much more emphasis is being placed on forensic investigation of the apartment and better late than never I suppose (if it was doesnt in the first place) .

If Robert Murat is vindicated he is due one hell of a lot of compensation.

JeremyVile · 08/08/2007 15:46

agree OO and there is always a chance that this dna is matched on a database, in which case they may trace him anyway.

btw Peachy that abductor was Swiss (wife lives in Spain) and was found dead in Switzerland but had visted the Algarve while Madeleine wase staying there. The other girl, a 5yr old, has not been found yet but her neatly folded clothes have
