Asda and Sainsbury’s merging!

Cos we can all afford Sainsbury’s prices can’t we? Eeeeek.

This is going to cause huge redundancies surely. Hope they don’t get rid of the Sainsbury’s magazine.

AgentProvocateur · 28/04/2018 14:33

It’ll no doubt lead to loads of job losses too.

BishopBrennansArse · 28/04/2018 14:33

My thoughts exactly. They're not even comparable price wise. Cheesed off, Sainsbos are waaaaay too expensive.

MongerTruffle · 28/04/2018 14:34

I'd be surprised if it doesn't violate competition law.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 28/04/2018 14:34

To be honest, I don't think ASDA will survive either way. Walmart aren't making the money that they want from it; so they'll either raise prices or sell up.

That said, Sainsbury's will do it with the intent of overtaking Tesco for biggest market share - so they won't want to alienate the ASDA shoppers and have them go elsewhere; then their purchase would be pointless.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 28/04/2018 14:35

I'd be surprised if it doesn't violate competition law.

I thought this - expert opinion appears to be that it may well be allowed as Tesco we're allowed to take over Bookers; but if it's not, they'd need to sell off a couple of hundred stores to make it acceptable.

BeyondThePage · 28/04/2018 14:35

It is to combine purchasing power - the brands will stay separate... for now...

ChikiTIKI · 28/04/2018 14:36

ASbury's? SainDA? :)

JenBarber · 28/04/2018 14:39

Urgh!

The combination of that particular green and orange will be quite offensive to the eyes.

Undercoverbanana · 28/04/2018 14:53

I’ll be sticking with Aldi.

Great prices, such friendly, helpful staff and I am in and out of there really quickly.

CakeOfThePan · 28/04/2018 14:56

It seems an odd partnership to me.
It makes me feel a bit sad and I don’t know why

fascinated · 28/04/2018 14:57

Well that’s the nail in the coffin for me - Sainsbury’s rubbish online system and rude driver this am has pushed me halfway back towards Tesco anyway....

Takfujuimoto · 28/04/2018 15:08

Fuck it I'm going to turn my garden into a mini farm, get a goat for milk some chickens and put my eldest to work on a veg patch and stat mandatory family fishing/foregoing weekends.

Takfujuimoto · 28/04/2018 15:09

Foraging*

Lentilbaby · 28/04/2018 15:11

The brands apparently would continue separately.

dreamingofsun · 28/04/2018 15:45

nightmare. i quite like sainsburys its nearly as nice as waitrose and cheaper. Asda i wouldnt touch with a barge pole and a lot of stuff my MIL buys from there is inedable

sounds a very strange combination - i would have thought the target audiences quite different

Vanillamanilla1 · 28/04/2018 15:51

Chikiti
More like Asbos

HappenstanceMarmite · 28/04/2018 15:51

Oh dear. I like Sainsburys, dislike ASDA. I can’t see this working for anyone.

BonnieF · 28/04/2018 15:54

Asda has been struggling for while.

It has been hit hardest of the ‘big 4’ by Aldi & Lidl, because it was the cheapest, and that’s why most of its customers shopped there. When It’s no longer the cheapest, its customers vote with their feet.

The competition authorities won’t be happy about this, and will force them to sell a lot of stores in
places like Derby where there are 4 big Sainsbury’s and 2 Asda but only 1 Tesco & 1 Morrison’s.

Justwanttoweeinpeace · 28/04/2018 15:57

I'd be nervous if I worked for either. Looks like they'll keep the brands separate but merge the operations. I guess with Tesco-booker coming from one end and Aldi / Lidl coming from the other they think added scale will stop them getting pushed out.

I don't want to lose Sainsbury's, I'm a nearly but not Waitrose budget. I don't want to drop quality or increase my spend.

I found Aldi a pita to shop and they don't deliver do they?

Vanillamanilla1 · 28/04/2018 15:57

I'm with a company ( 2 brands ) that have merged but under the same umbrella ...apparently
2 major companies
For the customer, no different apart from a few extra benefits ... for the employee it's absolutely disgusting how it's ended up and the worst I've ever seen it and I've been there 16 years
Everyone try spare a thought for those the other side of the counter
I'm guessing they'll be loads of perks for the customer but the employee will see , wages cut , more pressure to ' sell on ' .. overtime cut ... more pressure for shift managers to replace floor staff.. less sick pay , less holiday pay .. loads going on behind the scenes

Efrig · 28/04/2018 16:05

Asda is rubbish Shock I sincerely hope Sainsbury’s don’t adopt their quality.

Strange how different parts of the country have different quality service from the same chain. Round here ASDA are a great store , 2 huge shops locally with good reputation & several more slightly further afield. The online app can be a pain but once set up the delivery or click & collect is good. We also have Tesco & Sainsbo of different sizes, who deliver so not bad for out in the sticks!

Lentilbaby · 28/04/2018 20:59

@Vanillamanilla1
I have seen this before in a company I worked for years ago.
Good point and definitely something that needs to brought to the attention of the general public.

mirime · 28/04/2018 21:55

Looks like Walmart will still be a major shareholder, which is shit as I like Sainsbury's but have been boycotting Asda because of Walmart's anti-union stance. Now I'll be boycotting both of them and will have to shop at bloody Tesco.
