A mother who has spent 42 years arguing that the baby she was told to say goodbye to in the morgue was not hers, finally got an order to exhume the body for DNA testing, and the coffin was found to be empty.

I don't know the woman, the baby or the area, but poor woman. I could cry for her.

My Dp was telling me about that story earlier. It's horrific isn't it. The poor woman and baby.

Passmethecrisps Fri 01-Sep-17 20:02:42

It was on the BBC.

it must be totally devastating. I wish there was something I could do to help

This is not at all surprising. My mum had a baby around the same time who died. She was told she was only allowed to take the baby for burial because they died in exceptional circumstances. She was not allowed to see the baby before or after death. A stillborn child would have been buried 12 to a grave without the parents having any say. Just flung in a pit basically.

NormaSmuff Fri 01-Sep-17 20:09:47

that is rather harsh exxrecluse - is that comment necessary/?

troodiedoo Fri 01-Sep-17 20:10:49

God that's horrific. Poor woman. Hope she gets the answers she needs.

DropZoneOne Fri 01-Sep-17 20:17:38

Oh that's awful, the poor woman. Unfortunately she may never get answers 😔

Copperbeech33 Fri 01-Sep-17 20:38:15

This baby wasn't still born, he died at 7 days

Copperbeech33 Fri 01-Sep-17 20:39:07

42 years ago somebody closed that coffin knowing it was empty. That person might still be alive.

Kissisforpirate Fri 01-Sep-17 20:49:19

Stillborn babies and neonatal deaths used to be treated the same. That the baby should be taken away and never mentioned again. It was bloody awful.

indulgentberries Fri 01-Sep-17 21:05:24

A woman that I used to know had a stillbirth at the same time that I was born. She was told that she couldn't see her baby and that the hospital would 'deal with him' She wanted to see him but was told that she wasn't allowed to. She told me the detail of the birth but I won't repeat it here.

Read the Alder Hey inquiry. All sorts used to go on. Some probably still goes on today.
