Thanks for the new thread.

I see the Met are asking for more Government funds following their dealings with the three terrorist attacks in recent months. Perhaps they might start properly funding our emergency services now (not holding my breath).

Fire Chief on NW Tonight saying he wishes he could assure the public that the same couldn't happen to a tower block in our region, but he can't.
Andy Burnham says thorough checks will be undertaken.

I do have a fire door related question that I thought of after the latest posts on the other thread. There are lots of quotes of "told to put towels under the door to combat smoke" - aren't fire doors supposed to also be resistant to smoke for a certain amount of time? No point in flats being resistant to fire for an hour if nobody can breathe, surely?

So if smoke was coming in under the (front) doors, does it look like they did not meet regulations?

barrygibbscheekbones · 20/06/2017 18:47

Fire doors aren't air-tight, they are designed not to burn though, for say a hour, but there will always be small gaps that smoke can get through.

HandbagKrabby · 20/06/2017 18:58

Thank you for the link to the article about the Red Cross. I can't believe the council did not use them to their full capacity. I'd love to hear what they think is an emergency/ disaster as they were refusing offers of help left, right and centre

WellThisIsShit · 20/06/2017 19:02

That is a good point though, is there any regulation or standards around fitting the doors and the size of gaps left?

KnockMeDown · 20/06/2017 19:07

This is from the BBC website today :

One week on from the fire, King's College Hospital clinical director Duncan Bew said some victims were being kept in an inducedcoma after the fire.

He said staff had expected to see "hundreds"of patients with a range of injuries, including burns, smoke inhalation and caused by people "jumping from windows"...

"We knew there were many more people in the building. As time went on and we realisedthat we weren't going to receive those casualties, it was very sad," he added.

The implication is that there should have been more survivors arriving at the hospital, but they just didn't make it out. Sad

Here you go, Well www.vibrantdoors.co.uk/news/?p=350

It's from someone who sells them, but there's quite a lot of good information on there

Another one here from a company who offer consultancy: www.bwfcertifire.org.uk/knowledge-centre/regulations

WellThisIsShit · 20/06/2017 19:20

Thanks puzzled that link also cleared up another question I had about the doors...

" the frame would encompass an “intumescent strip” which when heated, expands to seal the gap between door and frame to keep the fire under control. FD60 doorsets typically come in a 54mm thick door, with a hardwood frame. All fire resisting doorsets must have an intumescent strip to be able to meet the legislation, with some fire door sets also requiring smoke seals"

This scares the hell out of me. The idea of being sealed in and not able to escape. Terrifying. As last weeks showed.

I'd read some mention of it in one of the earlier threads, and went as far as checking my door but then realised I didn't know what I was looking for. Sounds less obvious than what I was looking for - I thought it would look like stuck on foam tape for some reason.

Anyone know what this strip looks like? I live in a flat (in west London) so I feel like I need to know now.

BeyondOfbob · 20/06/2017 19:26

Thanks puzzled

If it's what I'm thinking of, on the inside of double fire doors anyway, it's like a plastic strip with a bubbley feel too it. I assume if it is, it's the air that expands in heat and seals it?

NapQueen · 20/06/2017 19:31

Whether to have smoke shields on doors is often simply down to preference. If a door has a smoke shield then youve little to no way of knowing if there is a fire on the other side. Open the door and you gibe the fire what it needs: air and space to spread.

No smoke shield means you see (yet also unfortunately feel) the smoke entering and so know not to open the door.

Sadly this fire was exacerbated by (imo) the cladding on the outside which meant they were trapped in the middle. This shouldnt have happened. The doors should have been enough. The presence of pvc window frames wont have helped either.

MonkeylovesRobot · 20/06/2017 19:40

WellThisIsShit I think you can ask LFB to come and check your home and offer you advice. I used to live in a block in Kensington and they came maybe two/three times in two years (whilst not a tower block, ours was an old block and deemed at risk due to a lack of fire alarms and smoke detectors in flats).

Barnet Homes resident on Channel 4 news says that he saw the insulation smouldering when someone dropped a cigarette on it during their redevelopment.

A statement from Barnet Homes says its not the flammable kind.

I remain curious as to when and how the charitable donations will be used to help people

Tiredemma · 20/06/2017 20:57
