Hi Mumsnet, I'm new on here so hope that I'm doing this right... I want to share a story with you to get some debate going and hope that it will help the story go national. Here's a link to local coverage:

www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/department-store-forced-to-remove-large-advert-after-complaints-it-sexualises-children/story-30200518-detail/story.html

I, and a few other Mums, recently complained about our local House of Fraser store's use of a huge billboard advertising Calvin Klein Womens Lingerie. My 11 yr old daughter and her friend agreed with me that the girl in the ad looked under the age of 16, around between 12-14 they decided. This prompted me to make a complaint to House of Fraser and to Action For Children, HoF's chosen charity. I have received an apology and assurance that the ad will be taken down today and from all HoF stores as it was booked by central PR office. Great news! It really does make a difference if you use your voice to speak out about something that you know is NOT OK! But now I want the story to get to the national press. I want House of Fraser and Action for Children to issue a statement to the press and I want the Advertising Standards Authority to uphold my complaint about the ad and for Calvin Klein to withdraw it and apologise.

What are your thoughts?

link is not safe according to my pc

antimatter Tue 14-Mar-17 10:40:21

the sad thing is that nearly half of respondents to the question Should the poster be taken down responded: " No it is a load of fuss over nothing"

this is the challenge we face in our society because me and you know this ad was inappropriate

ZackyVengeance Tue 14-Mar-17 10:41:03

managed to open it another way, how old was the model?

it's now in the Metro as well, and interestingly 20% more votes among Londoners to take it down

crystalgall Tue 14-Mar-17 15:45:40

How old is the model?

Youallpissmeoff Tue 14-Mar-17 15:50:43

Good lord. The model looks about 12shockangry

I was prepared to think it was an over reaction but in no way is the model over 16. She is so young. Horrible and so depressing that this can still happen.

Theimpossiblegirl Tue 14-Mar-17 16:00:01

She looks younger than my teens! Calvin Klein need to sort their act out, this is not a first for them.

user1489484466 Tue 14-Mar-17 16:02:42

Perhaps I should have posted in the Let Girls be Girls campaign page..?

DickToPhone Tue 14-Mar-17 16:11:45

She's either 16 or 17. I think 18, not 16, would be the minimum age to be appearing in suggestive/sexualised advertising.

Roos Abels.

DickToPhone Tue 14-Mar-17 16:14:13

DOB 23/9/1999, likely 17.

crystalgall Tue 14-Mar-17 16:40:49

It's hideous. She looks prepubescent. Where are the boobs?!
So typical of
CK. they have form
For this kind of advertising. Creepy
As fuck

user1489484466 Tue 14-Mar-17 16:44:05

It's not Roos Abels. I think it's Lulu on Models.com...no date of birth that I can find. Her actual age is not the issue. It's how the photo has been styled etc as well as the fact that they have chosen a model with zero curves because that is going to make her look underage/borderline underage.

bibbitybobbityyhat Tue 14-Mar-17 16:49:09

I'd love to see more underwear adverts featuring flat chested models. Most skinny girls have no boobs, although the film/tv industry would have us believe otherwise.

18 years +, obviously.

bibbitybobbityyhat Tue 14-Mar-17 16:50:52

Erm, most fashion models have zero curves!!

I don't see anything in that photo that suggests it has been styled to make her look underage at all, although I will accept that she could be under 18. It's hard to tell.

ZackyVengeance Tue 14-Mar-17 16:51:35

tbh she looks like most models these days, very thin.
I don't think she looks like a child. but if people do they are right to complain.

BurnTheBlackSuit Tue 14-Mar-17 16:55:30

It looks like it should be an anti-child abuse advert sad

Shenis Tue 14-Mar-17 16:56:28

She looks underage to me. That's really creeped me out. Could easily be a child abuse pic.

NotYoda Tue 14-Mar-17 16:56:37

She looks about 14 and she's pulling on the strap suggestively.

I think it's creepy as hell.

MrsTwix Wed 15-Mar-17 07:02:23

It is a creepy pic and well done for getting it banned. It's just a shame that it's more publicity for them now sad

specialsubject Wed 15-Mar-17 17:58:26

She looks stoned and unwell, never mind young! What a horrible picture.

prettywhiteguitar Wed 15-Mar-17 18:03:51

Pretty inappropriate I think

Crankycunt Wed 15-Mar-17 18:04:55

Yeah CK have really dropped a ball here. The model looks like a young teen and probably isn't but still, it's creepy as fuck.
