UK Calais Aid Workers accused of 'sexually-exploiting' migrants in the Calais Camp

A truly bizarre story. Apparently, several humanitarian groups working in the jungle have fallen out over some of their volunteers sleeping with the migrants. Because of this, a zero-tolerance policy is now being adopted.

I must admit, I did not expect to ever read this.

Well wherever there are vulnerable people, abuse is going on. As they are ready to put up with anything to survive they are an easy target. I feel sorry for the children and wonder what impact their traumatic experience will have on tomorrow's world.

Poor kids, I agree.

Although, in this case, it seems to be the female adult aid workers sleeping with the male migrants.

They're desperate men who will happily sweet talk gullible women who could be useful. .

If I were a handsome young guy stuck in that godawful place, I'd pick a plain British woman and win her over. Then propose. Anything to survive and get to the uk. Can't blame them.

It sounds obvious to say, but if it was male aid workers and female refugees, the hysteria would be deafening.

"If" - don't you mean when? And yes, I'm deafened by the silence.

Unfortunately, yes, this happens all the time. But as it's usually not in Europe, the silence remains deafening.

Yours, cynically,

The Guardian (surprise, surprise) had some ridiculous article a while back about managing the "sexual needs of NGO staff" or similar crap. Was either largely or entirely about men basically being unable to cope without sex Hmm thus paying for sex from the local extremely disadvantaged population. Awful. IIRC it covered stuff like whether the organisation should pay for taxis for the men to visit prostitutes, and definitely nothing about not letting these revolting men work for them. Because it's accepted that this happens. All the time. Interesting that when it's the other way round it's newsworthy.

Ugh, how horrible. Yeh just use people to get your own way. Yes, we can blame these men for seeing women as possessions to be used for their convenience (and vice versa, of course). Sick of people justifying appalling treatment of women because somehow the men's plight matters more.

The only reason this 'story' (and it is a story - a lot of it is hyperbole with some horrible factual errors) is getting any attention at all is because it's white women having sex with black men. No one gives a shit about men raping women. Or about the huge numbers of refugee children who have simply disappeared since arriving in Europe, spirited away by traffickers. No one seems to have given much of a shit when the children in the jungle were being tear-gassed. It's a big block of misogyny tied up with a racist bow.

FWIW thas always been a zero tolerance policy from the legit volunteer organisations working there but the jungle is not an organised refugee camp - it's a slum. There is no overall control and nothing to stop anyone entering the camp for whatever reason - whether their motives are benign or malignant.
