Hello my friends from across the pond :) I don't know how many of you follow US politics, but what are your thoughts on the impending presidential election here? Do y'all think it's crazy that Donald Trump got the republican nomination? Is it just as crazy that Hillary Clinton got the democratic nomination? What are your thoughts?

I think it's insane. One is facing charges for perjury and the other for fraud!!!

I'd suggest Gary Johnson would make an excellent POTUS.

I think we're all afraid of either outcome. For me anyway America seems to be a bit of an open air asylum where guns are freely available. Scarey place that you couldn't pay me to live in.

I think Trump is mentally deranged and we can kiss our global safety goodbye with a racist at the helm Sad.

Lol, I fully agree. I'm voting Johnson this year. I'd hate to be deported, even though my family has been here for generations :D In all seriousness, it is getting scary over here. I've been grocery shopping for 2 weeks at a time just to stay out of the city.

Not crazy at all. The most serious election in our lifetimes. Globalism vs America First, Hillary, Wall Street and TPP vs Trump and the people. With Hillary there will be more hawkish war behaviour, but Trump will sort Isis out very, very quickly.

Johnson is a former Republican, Establishment.

It is Trump vs the Establishment, the people vs the Establishment. Vote Trump and make America great again.

These are Trump's words and are what it is all about - America First vs Wall Street, TPP and the globalists

"We will no longer surrender this country, or its people to the false song of globalism. The nation-state remains -- the true foundation of peace and harmony.

I am skeptical of international unions that tie us up and bring America down. Under my administration, we will never enter America into any agreement that reduces our ability to control our own affairs. "

I haven't paid too much attention about Hillary but having seen the Americans being interviewed about Trump, I'm actually terrified for the world! I've listened to loads of them being interviewed and I can't believe what half of them are saying and they couldn't back up anything they were saying at all. It was like the poster who said she would not support gun laws like the UK have because she needed her gun for protection but when being told of there were no guns she wouldn't need it she was adamant that she needed it and would never give it up! WTF?
Some of the footage I've seen has been Reporters reading quotes from Hitler to Trump supporters, purportedly having come from Trump, and they all agreed with what was said, "if that's what Trump thinks then that's the way to go"
Jesus!! Trump in charge of the red button?!?! I'd have to emigrate to the moon!! Halfwit!

Allegedly 20% of the electorate don't like either of them, it was reported that it will be this 20% of the vote that will ultimately decide the outcome.

If I was American I'd be voting Trump. Clinton is a vile individual who will give you and the world more of the same.

Remember Spitting Image and The President's Brain is Missing, well with Trump it has moved from satire to reality.

Are world leaders hugely intelligent?

I doubt it - much of it is the gift of the gab and being at the right place at the right time.
Surely Trump will have enough advisors to keep him on the right path.

I'm not sure why everyone hates Hillary.

Probably. We are discussing this very thing in the long running post Brexit thread series.

Trump doesn't look quite so nutty if you compare him with the other Republican fruitcakes on offer.

Not quite sure what excuse the Democrats have for going with Hillary over Bernie or indeed anyone who has not been at the heart of the problem for the last 20 years.

Bemused at the idea of Trump as anti-establishment?!?!

He's wealthy through inheritance, with a history of bankrupting companies, lining his pockets and leaving workers in the lurch. What on earth qualifies him as a man of the people - except political inexperience and blatant prejudice? If anybody is the 1% (0.0001%?) it's him, surely?

Can someone summarise for me what the problem with Hillary is? I'm not very knowledgeable about international politics and I assumed as she'd been Secretary of State AND a former First Lady she'd be good as she has experience?

Hillary's main problem is that she's been around forever and is not exciting and interesting enough to grab the voter.

Trump is a clown who get the two seconds attention span electorate.

MissMargie

For a start there's Libya or 'Hillary's war' which doesn't really get talked about much. Currently there are about 2 million Libyans, (almost a third of the country's population) - having fled to Tunisia. There's roughly 2,000 armed gangs fighting over that chaotic country. These gangs are murdering, raping, robbing and generally terrorising the rest of the population? All thanks to Hillary.

There's her backing of the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. The role she played in supporting the coup in Honduras?. Google up 'the murder of Berta Cáceres' for another example of 'why Hillary is so hated'!

What about when she told the Iranians to 'if I'm the president, we will attack Iran [if it attacks Israel]' and boasted about how 'In the next 10 years, we would be able to totally obliterate them? What of her regarding Egypt's blood soaked, then dictator, Mubarak : as 'friends of my family'? Or In 2011, when it emerged that Gaddafi had been beaten, sodomised with a knife and murdered. Moments after receiving the news, Hillary Clinton laughed, commenting: *'We came, we saw, he died.'?

In this election the media are constantly pushing to idea that that gender equality should count more than the bringing of death, destruction and chaos to entire countries. Hillary Clinton will do the same in 2016 as Obama did in 2008. Kill and invade when required to do so, and thus further the interests of the elite that really govern America. But for so many people her being a woman transcends all else.

Hillary compromised national security with her personal emails, allowed four of our soldiers to be beheaded in Benghazi, and then said "what does it matter, they're already dead" or Something to that effect. Hired the dnc director who unfairly sabotaged Bernie Sanders campaign. She allowed Russia to buy stocks in our uranium, inadvertently, but still. As a lawyer she defended a horrendous child molester, and has defended her husband from dozens of sexual harassment and assault accusations. And she's not pleasant to look at to boot haha. Received political contributions from Saudi Arabia during the oil war...
