There doesn't seem to be as much coverage and outpouring of emotion about this attack compared to the recent ones in Paris etc. I think it's very scary that we are becoming more desensitised to these things.

Dd flies via Istabul for her job, thank heavens she was there for an early flight yesterday and is safely home. We're both very shocked, she said it was a matter of time when we last spoke.
Utterly horrific, those poor, poor people.

Yes, to desensitisation.

The coverage of attacks in huge swathes of the world is much lower than in others. There have been multiple terrorist atttacks in Nigeria, Afganistan, Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq and Turkey itself just in the first six months of this year.

Yes, I don't think it's just desensitisation. Or at least it is but we are more desensitised to it in places where we assume it happens lots.

This is the 4th attack in Istanbul this year I think.

Though as they pointed out, this could have happened at any major airport.

This one did have screening for foot passengers on the way into the terminal buildings (before they go through check in and full security for airside access) but it's less clear about cars. But even those partial level of checks are more than happen in many airports.

And I suppose that wherever your outer perimeter is, the risks will remain.

There isn't screening for cars, or at least I don't remember ever having been screened. But I think you are right about just moving the place of the attack to the outer perimeter wherever you place it.

BBC correspondent has just said that it is a major, co-ordinated attack to get round the level of security measures around the airport.

Turkish authorities said they believe it was Da'esh.

That seemed to be what they were hinting at last night, while not completely ruling out other groups. They sound a bit more clear on that this morning.

I am surprised that this happened at the airport.
I have been to Istanbul several times and bags are checked as you enter the airport.
It's sad , Istanbul is a wonderful place to visit

This is very sad but not surprising. Also Turkey joining of the eu was my main reason to vote leave. That country is spewing out so many terrorists it's scary. I feel sorry for the people of turkey. Their government is evil.

This is very shocking. I've travelled through Ataturk hundreds of times with work. I always felt that the security there was very high.

Some people can't help but see everything through referendum tinted lenses atm Rafa and with
