The reason Shilpa is on CBB is for the money, like all of them, but she is being paid a whopping amount of £400,000, I think I might put up with a bit of arguing and back stabbing for that amount of money, if she thought she was being victimized she would make an official complaint to BB and also she has the option of leaving the house, but of course thats a large amount of money to keep her in isn't it. The tiny amount they have shown of arguing etc is nothing in the amount of hours these people are together, this has to be the worst and most boring CBB ever, so after all this media interest in the 'racist bullying' the viewing has suddenly gone up big time!! Wonder if its all a ploy to get people to watch.........no surely not!! Last year Jodie Marsh was terribly bullied by Michael Barrymore and that freak Pete but there were only a few people who complained, wasn't because she was white was it?? This has all been blown up out of all context by the media and by Indians and Asians, burning effigys?? Oh come on, get a life, this is a 'game' show!! No one has mentioned Jermaine saying that Jades family were 'white trash'...........surely thats a racist comment isn't it???
There are far more important things in this sad World to be complaining about than a game show on TV people. Get Real!!

White trash is not really a racist remark. At least not in the States where he is from. Its more like saying your common.

thought I would look it up as I thought it was racism .That is calling someone white trash that is. It makes a reference to skin colour I suppose. So is that racist?

Report
paulaplumpbottom · 18/01/2007 23:41

It is a reference to skin color but its not really used that way. I'm not saying it was a nice thing to say, all I'm saying is that it doesn't carry racist overtones.

without wishing to get drawn into all of this - I'd equate the term 'white trash' to 'chav' here in the UK. I'm from across the pond
is the term chav seen as racist?

i actually think you are ill educated and i assume ,white

Report
Tortington · 18/01/2007 23:46

no - insulting and derogatory maybe. which is probably how the term was used in ths instance. However in the UK it would be considered racist, i think that grown ups realise there is a cultural difference in relation to that term rather than racial over/undertones.

From Wikipaedia:

"Rather, by behaving in a manner considered indecorous...these...(white trash) are disrupting implicit understandings of what it means to be white." The term "designates ruptures of conventions that maintain whiteness as an unmarked, normative identity" and is used "in racialized contexts where class and race differences become conflated, overlapping rather than remaining clear and distinct."

I'd always understood white trash to mean behaving in a way unbecoming of white people, and therefore a racist term on 2 levels, by definition. To use it is to denigrate blacks as well as whites. But I understand that it now refers to general chavviness as well. Oh, so that's all right then! (What a world we do live in)

'Indians and Asians burning effigys' Ahh, so that's where dh is now then.

There are several threads on MN discussing this issue already.

Indeed, lulumama

"White trash" is racist, "trailer trash" (which I think is an equivalent term isn't it?) is not.

Report
lulumama · 20/01/2007 18:04

the reason for my face was this came at a time, as mercy said, when there are a plethora of threads debating the semantics of this issue......and this sounded like a cynical attempt to try and make jermaine sound racist, rather than focusing on the fact the jade, danielle and to a lesser extent Jo, are wthout a doubt bullying shilpa....the racism angle has been done to death now.

jermaine is not and has not bullied anyone in the house. and picking on one phrase that he said, that in the USA is the equivalent of saying chav, is not the same as a sustained attack, with racism and ignorance at the heart of it.

expat explained the white trash issue on another thread.

it might be 'sad' to complain about a game show, but 10s of thousands of people have complained, and we are all debating it here and showing that racism will not be accepted. and that is a good thing IMO.

BTW , don;t think it is a pleasant phrase to use, and nor do i like chav, but it cannot be equated to jade et al's nasty, vindictive bullying

fultime- shilpa is not aware of what has been said about her behind her back. so she's in no position to complain about it. she only knows what has been said to her face.

i don't really understand your point about jodie marsh. she's white, as are barrymore and pete burns, so there is no racial difference there to pick on by a bully. her bullying stemmed from her saying on the one hand she hates being labelled a tart etc, and on the other hand presenting herself as a tart and writing an expicit sex column, wearing vests scoring her lovers etc etc. i don't see how her being white has the slightest thing to do with it.

'Not all racists are stupid, but all stupid people are at some level racists, cowed into resentment and mistrust by the enormity of their incomprehension. In proportion as the world and its ideas are a mystery to you, so the world and its peoples are a threat.'

quote from an article in the independant today, thread about it on here already.

why is it so important for some people to deny it when racism is happening? very odd indeed.

Report
edam · 20/01/2007 18:51

Dizzybint, thing about Jodie is it was sexist bullying but that attracted not 1/1,000th of the comment that racist bullying does. Racism seen as wrong and evil, sexism seen as so OK it's not even worthy of comment. That's what's worrying. They should BOTH (plus anti-semitism/homophobia etc. etc.) be considered unacceptable.

Report
DizzyBint · 20/01/2007 18:53

yes edam. my point though was why was the OP pointing out that the bullying with jodie was not put down to her race, when it wouldn't be, as all participants were of the same race.

Yeah, race relations legislation is stronger than sex discrimination. Which tells you something.

but jade and her family ARE trash (the word white isn't necessary) - nothing but trash comes of her big mouth
