Apparently it violated their air space and ignored repeated warnings.

MN still messing around on iPhone so I can't do a link. Breaking news on the BBC

DonkeyOaty Tue 24-Nov-15 09:26:53

Oh feck.

Lweji Tue 24-Nov-15 09:28:23

It was bound to happen some time. They have been flying way too close for comfort.

(is it bad that I get most breaking news from MN Active?)

emotionsecho Tue 24-Nov-15 09:28:25

Indeed Donkey, this does not bode well.

Lweji Tue 24-Nov-15 09:28:47

Also, SHIT!

Sallyingforth Tue 24-Nov-15 09:32:46

Putin has been throwing his weight around too much lately. Something like this was bound to happen.

MrsGradyOldLady Tue 24-Nov-15 09:33:34

I just read about this. And would agree with the "Oh shit" comments.

Lucymatilde Tue 24-Nov-15 09:34:41

Let's see how Putin turns this round and spins it into Russia being the entirely innocent one.

SleepyForest Tue 24-Nov-15 09:35:18

I hope the pilots survived.

floppyjogger Tue 24-Nov-15 09:35:35

Any news on the pilots yet?

DoctorTwo Tue 24-Nov-15 09:35:36

Turkey is saying the plane, a Su24, was in its airspace; Russia says it can prove it wasn't. One of the pilots has apparently been captured by Turkmen rebels.

Lweji Tue 24-Nov-15 09:37:07

I wouldn't be surprised if this had been engineered by Russia...

WhoTookAllTheGoodNicknames Tue 24-Nov-15 09:37:21

Another person who read this and thought 'oh shit'.

Without sounding too dramatic, I've been wondering wtaf is going on with the world at the moment.

Fugghetaboutit Tue 24-Nov-15 09:42:41

Putin keeps violating airspace. I guarantee if anyone flew over there right now they would get shot down without warnings.

Why did the pilot ignore all the warnings?

strawberryandaflake Tue 24-Nov-15 09:55:03

sad I worry for the world. I don't want my babies to live through a world war.

Lweji Tue 24-Nov-15 09:56:49

If there is one, they probably won't. sad

Luxyelectro Tue 24-Nov-15 09:56:56

There is a photo online of a pilot with a parachute.
Hopefully this means nobody was killed. I don't know how many people are in each plane

Lweji Tue 24-Nov-15 09:59:08

Two parachutes seem to have landed.

Apparently, Russia has been bombing inside Turkey, and one of the pilots may have been captured.

VocationalGoat Tue 24-Nov-15 09:59:20

This is the second time. They shot down a drone in October.
Turkey and Saudi Arabia actively support hardline extremism in Syria.
Turkey initially supported the rebels which is the very group ISIS/ISIL spawned from.
It's a Sunni/Shia/Oil war which has gotten so complicated, so out of hand.

I am not scared of Putin.
I don't think Putin is a lovely, cuddly great fella... are any of them?
But I have a harder time with the guys supporting the hardliners.
Fuck, they're ALL hardliners when you think about it.

As usual, we have a bunch of psychopathic megalomaniacs at the helm.

Goat, yes.

One pilot captured by Turkish rebels (not confirmed, but seems undisputed) and one being searched for.

meditrina Tue 24-Nov-15 10:12:28

'Expect diplomatic fireworks' - indeed.

A NATO country shoots down a Russian plane in circumstances as yet unclear, just as the international community is trying to find a way ahead over Syria. It's hard to imagine a bigger spanner in the works.

Fossil fuels... the trigger for every modern war in the Middle East.
This is just another oil/economic war with a Crusades twist.
Even ISIS has its own oil empire. Bless.
