How not to behave in a foreign country

So matey here www.facebook.com/dr.emil.kaminski climbs a mountain in a foreign land, like so many backpackers before him.

And he persuades fellow members of the group climbing that it's a good idea to pose naked, piss on the sacred mountain top (you are supposed to 'ask for permission' of the spirits before doing this), and then plaster it all over your public Facebook pages of your half-assed travel-the-world-and-make-crappy-Youtube-videos venture www.facebook.com/Monkeetime?fref=ts

While you are still in said foreign country, in a small town where white people will stick out like a sore thumb.

And then an earthquake killed 18 people on the mountain, which was ascribed to the wrath of the mountain following their behaviour.

Then the others in the group were arrested, while he attempted to hide out

Now he has been arrested as well....

I'm trying and failing to find any sympathy for them. They should cough up, come home and grow up.

FFS....showing total lack of respect to the locals and the local culture.

What they did was totally insensitive. They're in a Muslim country for goodness sake. Stripping off is that last thing they should be doing.

I have no sympathy for an of them.

I think it's fine.

Now if you'll excuse me I just need to get starkers as I'm going to Westminster Abby to pose naked for my new profile picture.

Taxi!!!

I have zero sympathy for any of them, they deserve exactly what they get, maybe it will teach them to respect other cultures.

I saw this on the news at lunchtime. Why did these idiots think that getting naked and pissing on a sacred site was a good idea?

If on holiday, want to get them out for the boys AND then have the earth move, GO Malaysia.

Disrespectful, but the police are involved and in this case 'someone died', so as a parent of girls and putting myself in their parents place, I wouldn't just be worried about securing her release - but also not having her ass dragged through the Malaysian court by relatives of those that died, claiming for some form of damages.

As far as I know, they have been arrested on obscenity charges rather than angering-the-gods-and-causing-death-by-earthquake charges which seems entirely fair.

Why wee on the mountain, any mountain?

No sympathy here. Shocking sense of entitlement and arrogance. I heard they are treating them really well, separate from the normal prisoners. I thought, "that's a shame!".

Well, holding it in for a day long hike while trying to stay hydrated would be rather painful. What do you think hikers normally do?

Aside from that, it was such a foolish thing to do but it must be so worrying for their families.

Totally disgraceful behaviour and zero respect for the country. I hope they are taught a lesson they won't forget.

honestly they would have got away with the stripping naked bit if they hadn't then gone on plastered it all over Facebook. The guy who did the Facebook bit was apparently acting as their tour guide. I wonder if he had a visa to work in Malaysia.

Oh, I though weeing was part of the 'thing'. I've never weeed al fresco on a hike, and I've hiked hot places, I've hiked cold places, and I've hiked bloody hot places.

Report
DoughDoe · 11/06/2015 14:46

the 'thing' was stripping off on top of the mountain and then posting 'fuck Malaysia you backward fucks' (or words to that effect) on Facebook.

After that had been done the guides came forward to say that they were otherwise disrespectful (swearing at them, urinating inappropriately), but it was the nudity & the Facebook posturing that cause it all.

If you've got no respect for the place, people or culture, why go in the first place?

social media strikes again. its ones of the reasons why i refuse to have twitter or facebook. it leads to nothing but trouble. serves them right though. you should respect other cultures and countries when you travel.

While in Majorca and Ibiza the locals have had no objections over young Brits daily behaviour abroad for decades. Hmmm.

Yes once again we are being British and talking about fair play/respect in countries some way different to our own - and btw I confess to peeing at the top of Mt Snowdon as edged over that thin bit of rock at the top over the sheer drop - unfortunately a "lesson" in many of these countries is often out of proportion to the 'crime'.

Not to totally derail the thread choc but what do you do then? Do you just hang on until you arrive at a campsite?

I'm thinking of DOE and Scout expeditions or day long hiking trips with adults. I can't imagine asking my scouts to hold it in for a day!
