Bad Influence Bratz

Hi all. I know we have discussed Bratz dolls and their influence on young girls but I have just seen some more negative articles that are concerning me, especially one where mums are complaining to Ofcom about the Bratz TV show. Apparently one of the characters recently referred to someone as a 'spaz' and the disability rights groups are saying what a negative effect that kind of term has, especially on impressionable children.' I think it's pretty disgraceful. Not just is it totally insensitive but its also encouraging kids to gang up on each other - exactly the kind of bullying mentality we are trying to eradicate at the moment.

Did anyone else hear about this? What do you all think?

Haven't heard this but think these toys are just awful.

The toys themselves are just awful, and them using that phrase does not suprise me at all

The piercings, skimpy clothes, make-up, attitude. All of it winds me right up

Not the role models I want for my DD thanks

wouldn't surprise the show is awful! i watched it last week it's trying to be pc but failing miserably

hairymclary · 05/11/2006 22:06

I think they're vile.

sandcastles · 05/11/2006 22:07

Everything about them is awful!

I didn't know about the spaz thing until somebody mentioned (on here, I think)

They will not be welcome in this house, and although dd is only 3, I am making that understood to relatives early, just in case!

I think the reference for the 'spaz' comment was one of the characters said it about a cat, if i remember rightly from an old thread here. And, as it's from the US, the term 'spaz' just doesnt not have the same meaning as here, as witnessed when Tiger Woods used it and cause uproar. There was a thread about that too. So I don't think the comment was used in a bullying context - I'm happy to be corrected. and I in some ways I hope I am wrong, because I'd love to see these horrible little dolls taken off the shelves along with all the guff that is marketed with them. I HATE THEM. but sadly, the complaints made may not stand up; they may just edit that episode for UK viewing maybe?

Moomin · 05/11/2006 22:09

meant 'doesn't', that extra 'not' shouldn't be there

southeastastra · 05/11/2006 22:10

the show has to be watched to be believed its so bad

Can I just say that I hate Bratz, but when we were in the US earlier this year, my friend's wife called one of my dd's a spaz. She said it in a completely jokey way, and it's not a word the dd's have ever heard, so meant nothing to them.

I sat there thinking "did she really say that?", and wondered if I should say something. However, I don't really know her very well, but she doesn't seem the kind of person who would normally use that kind of language, so I came to the conclusion that it must not have the same meaning in the US.

I really do hate Bratz though, and would happily see them banned - dd2 wanted a piece of clothing from their range a year ago when she was 6. And the item in question? A red leather-look mini skirt....
