I have updated my anit virus. How do you update to the latest operating system? confused I don't do online banking dinosaur who knows too many IT people who put me off

What concerns should I have? I have opened the odd dogy link from trusted people who emailed me.

That would be dodgy link, woof, woof.

If you have Windows, make sure that updates are enables. Not much more you can do.

It's only possible for your bank account to be accessed online, if you don't do any online banking, if you respond to emails or unexpected links asking for your bank account details. If you've not claimed your inheritance from a Nigerian lottery winner, you're possibly OK.

How do you make sure updates are enabled? confused blush

Which version of windows are you on? XP? Win7? Win8? something else? It makes a big difference.

What antivirus package are you using?

MollyGetsHerWandOut Mon 02-Jun-14 23:04:52

Norton, which was updated an hour again. I have no idea which windows blush or how to find out.

click "start," click "help."

What does it say?

For example, on mine it says

"Featured this month:

What's new in Windows 7

Getting started with Windows 7".

Then click "start," click "control panel"

what does it say?

PigletJohn Mon 02-Jun-14 23:27:11

or, finish what you're doing, close down your programs neatly, click "start," put mouse pointer on "shut down" and click "restart"

Watch carefully, it will close down and reopen, and there will (probably) be a Windows logo that tells you what version you have.

I am also utterly freaked out by this.
I don't do online banking but di shop online now and again.
I am a oldir technophobe. I run my avg every day and update that when ever it tells me to but it's only the free version. Do you think I need another anti virus?

PigletJohn Tue 03-Jun-14 13:33:51

Which version of windows are you on?

Can I barge in ? I am on windows 8. Am I at risk?

PigletJohn Tue 03-Jun-14 13:45:22

Windows 8 is still being updated by Microsoft who distribute patches (usually after a flaw has become widely known). XP and older versions are not.

You need to verify that your Windows has Automatic Updates set on, and that you have a security package giving virus protection, and firewall set on (this may be included in the security package) and that you automatically or manually run regular and frequent scans.

After that, you need to be chaste in avoiding downloads or opening untrustworthy websites or emails.

You do not have to use Windows, there are other OS around. Do not believe Apple enthusiasts who tell you that nobody attacks them.

My dad still uses XP on an ancient pc. He's screwed isn't he?

Doristhecamel Tue 03-Jun-14 16:05:29

Windows 7 gets online updates.

TheSameBoat Tue 03-Jun-14 18:29:04

Try Malwarebytes. It's free and detects stuff that normal anti virus doesn't.

Sophos anti virus is also free but it can slow things down. Still that's probably worth it.

I'm on windows 7 but our norton subscription ran out.

What about iPod/iPad etc though?

Celestria Tue 03-Jun-14 18:41:40

Also use advanced system care free from iobit to clean up your system and install missing updates.

Like to see them try emptying my account haha hmm

Piglet You can't use your pogo stick and post at the same time, you know. As you can see, I tried and failed too. grin
