"The truth is, of course, there is no end to this era. We?re almost precisely in the same state, government-wise, as we were"

Absolutely. There is nothing to celebrate and everything to keep working for.

I don't entirely agree with her - having grown up in S Yorks during the miner's strike when Maggie imposed martial law without actually bothering to admit it - but she is very persuasive and makes a good case. (Not that I'd go as far as turning up to a party, mind.)

Wonder what people will say when Arthur Scargill dies? Or will it be conveniently forgotten that he closed more pits than the government ever did as he is canonised with his last breath. Time will tell.

Says exactly what I feel tbh...I cannot be partying when an old lady has finally been released from her suffering....even if the end was at the Ritz.
I am a child of the 70s and 80s, I didn't agree with all that she did but the only celebrating I feel like doing is raising a glass and giving thanks that she is now at peace after years of ill health. Tbh I would feel the same about anyone in the same position having seen many elderly ladies and men with Alzheimer's and stroke damage. It is not an easy existence and death is sometimes a release.

Entirely agree. Arthur Scargill was the cause of far more problems for northern industrial communities than Thatcher.

I don't know where you get the idea that Scargill is canonised from, that's very far from the truth. Quite apart from being seriously outplayed in the strike, he's had a very nasty legal battle with the NUM.
