Yes, he's been relatively lucky. My husband is a sports journalist and the initial reports were that it was far more serious than a couple of broken ribs. Winter is a really prime training time for many cyclists though so I don't know how that will affect him next year. That driver has a lot to answer for .

Lalalonglegs, that's pretty mean !! Just because he's a champion cyclist doesn't mean it was automatically the drivers fault! It's quite possible it was his.

Do you know what, I doubt it. I ride a bike a lot and I get fed up of having near collisions and people saying: "I didn't see you!" You didn't see me because you weren't bloody looking, I don't just materialise out of thin air - I've got hi-vis clothes, I've got lights, I don't weave in and out of traffic. I would bet any money that, as this woman was pulling out of a garage forecourt, she just glanced down the road and drove before she'd really registered what was there, if she looked at all.

I hope the police prosecute him for not having lights on his bike after lighting up time which is illegal and would make any road user difficult to see.

It's a very busy spot where it happened, just a few yards from a roundabout that 's a major junction of the M6 & next to a big petrol station.

i know the junction at that bp garage well, it's just down the road from where we used to live. it can get quite busy round there, the garage has entrances on 2 sides, plus there are side roads and also the m6 roundabout. when it's dark, visibility is low.

bureni - can you say where you heard that BW wasn't riding with lights, or have you just made that up for your own wrong-headed reasons?

I see that the woman in the Astra who injured BW has been reported for driving without due care and attention. ( I presume pulling onto the road without looking properly.) Petrol station attendant who was first on the scene noted she saw flashing lights on his bike and he was still wearing his helmet.

I wonder if she made a calculation about his speed based on normal experience of bikes? Not that he was going too fast but he's probably twice as fast as the average cyclist. Just a possible factor.

Well, no really dr. It was in the dark and he had a front light. So as with any lit up road user it's quite simple to guess the roughly the speed of an object and crucially if one has time to 'pull out' in front of it. (whether it's a TdF winner or not.)

apparently he can do no wrong since he won an insignificant little medal, but its alright to speed about with no lights in the dark, dont you just love the way there was so many police out to support this person yet the eye witness only "heard " things now. I hope the police take the same action against a " national hero" for his illegal use of the queens highway but then they are immune as always.

Don't you know that there is just something wrong with anyone who chooses to exert themselves rather than sit on their arse in a car. It is not natural I tell you. They are all up to no good and we can't trust them at all to be reasonable law abiding citizens. We can be quite sure that each and every one of them is breaking some kind of law, or if they are not, the nasty, filthy habit should be illegal anyway so we might as well treat them all as criminals. It's just another example of broken Britain, the world gone mad, too much political correctness blah blah this day and age froth, froth.

I don't think the police would charge the driver if BW was at fault. The driver has made it clear she didn't see him at all, the police obviously think she should have seen him, he was easy enough to see.

DH has had cars pull out in front of him, he got compensation subsequently so pretty clear who was at fault. He cycles at about 20 mph when cruising, faster when putting in an effort. As a driver, I have pulled in front of mopeds before, entirely my fault. Take it on the chin.
