Lads Mags - new guidelines

What do you think? How do you feel about it and will the new guidelines make any difference?

All 'top shelf' material?

Personally glad of the new guidelines. Dreading having to explain magazine covers to my son when he starts asking questions that are almost in reach!

I think its wrong that all men's mag have half naked woman on them, even the ones that was about cars (WTF) woman's mags don't have naked men on them so why do all mens mags have to??

Exactly. Sex sells. Have you noticed that it's the same with adverts? Very rare to see a naked man on anything, or even a half naked man for that!

hurray! in the states, these types of mags are covered w/paper - except the title - and wrapped and have to be either on higher shelves or behind the counter in many states. you also have to be over 18 to purchase.

b/c they're nothing but porn, IMO.

have you noticed that men's mags have stupid stories, whereas a woman's mag will have proper story, real life dramas, and advice about STIs and such?

expatinscotland · 25/03/2006 22:35

no, b/c i'm too busy being insulted by having this crap shoved right into my face at eye level everytime i go into a shop to buy food.

Hi Expat, haven't see you for ages but then I've been stuck to my post natal thread. How are the LO's? and how are you?

Very interesting, didn't know that was the case in the US. That's great. We should be doing the same.

My Dh buys a car mag (forgotten the name) I have looked through them and am shocked at the porn that is in them. My brother goes to Maxpower each year and he has shown me the pics of him with half naked models, I thought that Maxpower was about the cars.. [naive emoticon]

when i first got here, i didn't know what a 'glamour model' was. LOL! what a laugh, especially as it leads to a 'career'.

what does it say about society when this type of behavior is rewarded w/riches? what kind of message does that give young people?

I must admit when i go to a shop/supermarket i may want to buy myself a magazine like like ok or best or something, but i feel so embarrassed going to the shelf to look for it because all i can see in my face is alod of tits, bums & naked women, i think it is wrong totally wrong.

Worse still, what do you make of this in Zoo magazine?

Win a boob job: Is it wrong?
Zoo magazine is in trouble for running a "Win a boob job for your girlfriend!" competition on their front page.

Inside it said "Make your lady a more rounded individual with out feel-good, selfless, world-first competition. Zoo is giving away a £4k boob job for your partner and a £1k cash prize for you!"

The ad could put pressure on some women to have potentially harmful surgery and so is irresponsible, the Advertising Standards Authority ruled.

Do you agree?

the little ones are settling nicely, chacha! how's your wee boy.

yes, i was really, really shocked when i first got here and saw naked women in newspaper.

it just seemed so odd to me, like, 'um, this is a newspaper, not a porn mag. why is there a topless gal in here?'

my mum was gobsmacked! she was like 'you mean just anyone can pick this up or buy it?'

it was funny.

then when we saw TV after the 'watershed'. and people were using the f word and getting naked.

LOL! she dropped a tea cup she was holding. 'is this regular TV and not cable? i didn't think we had cable in the room! let me call the concierge . . . '

she almost whipped out her rosary there and then Wink.

I hate going into tesco to get mags, the women's mags are at one end (thats fine) but the kids comics and mags are right next to the lad's mags, so so wrong...

Report
expatinscotland · 25/03/2006 22:42

my dh does not buy these. he's not interested in furthering an industry which treats women like sex objects for sale.

LOL :o

Like my grandma years ago when I went to visit her abroad (the ME). I had a Madonna video on and she asked me 'why is she wearing her underwear?' 'is it normal over there?'

Just seen this:

'Lads Mags' (FHM, Front etc) - covers and contents are as explicit as 'top shelf' porn *

Yet they are not age restricted. Indeed weeklies such as Zoo/Nuts are aimed at teenage boys (and boys as young as 11/12)

And they are typically displayed at eye level - often next to children's items and promoted widely throughout shops.

We call on all responsible retailers (supermarkets and petrol staions) to treat 'lads mags' as soft porn - to display them, covered, on the top shelf. And that retailers with a no-porn policy (such as 'ethical COOP') not to stock them at all.

You can sign a petition at petiton spot.

haahaa! chacha, my grandmother came in during a boy george video when my sister and i were teens, and remarked 'oh, what a pretty little girl!'

you should have seen her expression when we told her it was a man!

My gran was the type who covered her head to go to church.

She just didn't get the whole Boy George gender-bending thing. She kept saying, 'Why does he want to do that?' Then, whenever she'd see a music video, she'd ask, 'Is he/sher really a boy/girl?'

there is a lot of difference between a glamour model and a porn star. years ago i modelled for these sorts of magazines and i made a lot of money from it
