Baby found in bag in Brazil lake

Authorities are looking for the baby's mother

Watch the rescue
Brazilian TV has broadcast footage of a baby girl being rescued from a black plastic bag floating in a lake.
Amateur footage captured the moment when the bag was fished out and opened by a park worker in Belo Horizonte.

Jose da Cruz, who was filmed performing the rescue, said he was first alerted to the bag by sounds of a "cat crying".

The baby, thought to be two months old, is said to be healthy, and is being kept in hospital while authorities search for relatives.

"I heard a sound of a cat," Mr da Cruz told television channel TV Globo. "But, between a child and a cat, the noise is the same.

"Then, the noise was increasing and it caught my attention."

Mr da Cruz said he then called security and a local cameraman, who happened to be filming in the area, filmed the baby being pulled out.

Eyewitnesses said that the plastic bag was floating attached to a piece of wood in the Pampulha Lagoon, one of the city's main parks.

I saw the clip of her rescue. The man who rescued her thought it was an animal and fished the bag out of the river. When he opened it up, the baby was inside, to his astonishment.

She is believed to be about 2 months old. I have a seven-week-old baby girl. Can't imagine what could drive a mother to put her in a bag and throw her in a river! Poor wee soul.

Luckily she is alive, healthy and recovering in hospital.

from a country like that

No offense intended by that comment BTW. I mean from a country where sadly babies are abandoned for whatever reason on a regular basis.

I'd LOVE to adopt abroad! It's out of our means, but it'd be soooo awesome.

My aunt and her Indian husband adopted their third child and only girl from India. I remember when they brought her home. I was 11 and the whole family went to the airport to greet them and welcome the new baby. She was only 6 weeks old.

Who in their right minds would put a baby in a plastic bag and then dump it in the river??????

She was dressed in pink with a headband on, did you see that? Someone took the care to dress her, to buy those clothes for her, and then dump her in the river?????????? This is just awful. I hope they find whoever is responsible, because that person needs serious counselling and I just hope they haven't had more children or intend to have any more, because they're obviously not fit to parent a child!

Part of me is wondering if she was kidnapped or something since she did look cared for. I know this is unlikely but I don't believe someone would dress a baby then try and kill it... Not in such pretty clothes in such a known poor country

Even in the darkest depths of my insanity during my pregnancy, even when I honestly believed that the baby inside me was a demon and I was possessed, if you gave me a real live baby there is no way I could have put that baby into a plastic bag, tied a stick to the bag and then dumped it in the river. Depressed women abandon their babies, but this required thought and a bit of planning.

The poor poor; thank god she was found safe and well, before it was too late. The footage is something else - I can't iamgine.

Apparantly witnesses saw a woman throw the bag into the water

Who? Why? How?

I'm reserving judgement about the parents etc until more is known. The main thing is the babe was found in time and is alive and healthy
